Well, we learned something about lakes this question anway. Tanganyika still has more water than Superior.

    OK new question.

This man was nominated before his death, but is the only person to actually win the Nobel Peace Prize posthumously.

Probably not the right answer, but my guess would be Yitzhak Rabin? At least he was assasinated not that long after winning the prize, if memory serves me right (but it was probably after though).

Hmm, looked it up and Rabin got the prize in (December) 1994 and was murdered (damn extremist bastards!) November 4th 1995. So that was not the correct answer,I guess.

Also, I did find the correct answer, but will not write it here, as it would be cheating. Most likely it wont be much of a hint to anyone, but as a bonus info I can say that the American embassy here in Copenhagen is located on a major street named after him (not far from where I live btw). Also, the person is one of only two people from Scandinavia to receive the accolade post-WWII.

No Idea, but I thought the question should be bumped. I love this thread.

I didn't know this at all, so I have to admit that I did cheat and look this one up.

"In 1961, the prize was awarded to the second Secretary General of the UN, Dag Hammarskjöld, for strengthening the organization. Hammarskjöld is the only person to have received the prize posthumously, a few months after his death in a plane crash in the Congo; the Nobel statutes were later changed to make a posthumous prize virtually impossible."

Boo hiss! I wanted to see if anyone knew.

Anyways, Hammarskjold was probably the most effective leader of an organization that is supposed to be dedicated to world peace, and this is an award that is dedicated to peace, so in a way it is ironic that so few people would be able to answer this.

Is the reason something different than the reason any other European nation should be grateful?

Probably some sort of preferential deal on Panama Canal access. Maybe during the Falklands conflict, Britain had warships in the Pacific and Panama granted them quick access through the canal to get to Argentina.
