Cooney was overhyped to some degree, but he was also rushed. Cooney was a pretty good fighter who was put in too soon with an underrated ATG champion. He had wins over Lyle, Jimmy Young, and Norton. These were decent wins but they were all past there primes and it gave Cooney's promotors and the public something to build on. He also made a good effort in the Holmes fight and managed to give a pretty good accounting of himself for a while. He showed a very good chin and took an immense amount of punishment before being stopped. Unfortunately, he is one of the examples of a fighter who is never the same after taking a beating.
Audley was a far bigger hype job. He was made out the be the next great champion having accomplished even less than Cooney did. If Cooney had fought Harrison, Harrison would still be on his back.
Joel Julio was another totally overrated hypejob. Michael Grant was a great example and probably Tommy Morrison, too. Morrison was a decent fighter, but he was another great white hope who built a record on fading talent and got sparked when he stepped up. Every win he had against a quality opponent was against an aging fighter. His best win was probably the Foreman win.
