Good effort - the most abundant element on earth (and the universe) is hydrogen. (if you think of all the compounds that have hydrogen atoms bonded into them, it makes more sense than having just lots of loose hydrogen gas floating around.)

Nome was actually my guess when I first thought of the question. But the map says otherwise. The answer is Barrow, a town of approx 4-5,000 people. My brief research tells me the economy is primarily oil field related, also there is a fairly large contingent of native americans who rely on subsistance hunting.
