I'd like to know where you saw the rankings that said Anderson is No5, and Muttley No3? If you look at the boxrec site Anderson is above Muttley![]()
You wrote "you have spoke to him" and "you no him". Who's stupid?Originally Posted by skel1983
Of course he's going to say he's more focused now - every boxer says that, especially if they've lost and switched trainers . If you think a boxer who trains down to 147lbs and looks very lean at that, can then shed another 7lbs without being fairly close to the welterweight limit first then you're mad without any idea of the consequences of muscle protein depletion. I just know the rumours that are circulating, which tend to be true, as I'm in the business.![]()
Thanks TD for puting things straight. I hope the stitches are out now. Why would you want Peely to beat Young?...Not that he would. Ideally we want a good crop of young Scottish boxers to go out there and contest for commonwealth, British and European honours. Fighting each other at this stage doesn't raise the sport in this country. The more good boxers we can produce the higher the profile of the sport and lets be honest, Scotland could do with a few more homegrown heroes.Originally Posted by Top Dog
I think Kevin can go on to better things but he has to improve and perfect his style and learn from past performances. He's definitely got the will and the heart but that's not always enough at the higher levels.![]()
How do you mean "why would I want Peely to beat Young", why not?? I agree it doesn't always make sense for scottish guys to fight each other, especially when there is plenty of english guys to go up against. But since the fight is on (again!) there isn't a lot to say apart from pick the winner. I don't think Mcneil has the power or pressure of Anderson, but I do think he'll beat Young just by using his movement. Young is over-rated in my opinion. Go on Colin, you gave him a lesson in the amateurs, time to do it again.
I mean TD, at 33 years old Colin's no spring chicken - where does he go from there; hold onto the celtic light middleweight title or become a journeyman or both. We want young clean living guys taking the sport forward not over-the-hill sluggers who fail drug tests. Yes, he did beat Gary in a close match in the amateurs but there's over 10 years age difference - Gary was still a boy. Now Gary's matured and has a really good pro style. He'll be fired up; I can't see McNeil getting up from the canvas after r3.![]()
I don't see how Young will K.O McNeil in 3 rounds, Ossie Duran, who was the commonwealth champ at light middlweight (not now) couldn't k.o. him. So Young is better than Ossie DuranI know styles make fights, but Mcneil took some hefty shots from Duran and was there till the end. If Peely has more than 70% of his skill left he'll give Young a boxing lesson. McNeil has had a step up in fighting Duran, Young has been fighting hand picked run of the mill journey men, he's still to have any kind of test. Fact :P
That's right it was a step up in class for McNeil but he didn't get the fight on merit, he was a last minute stand-in. So he managed to see it through to the end.....well done him! But Ossie's no great puncher.
You're right again, Gary hasn't had a proper test to date and I don't think fighting Peely will be a test for him either. If McNeil is a good boxer why did he hang around until he was thirty in the amateurs, why didn't he turn pro earlier? I'll tell you why. He liked to jump about being the big man beating up kids.
There's plenty of time for Gary at 22 to develop and learn his trade. That's the problem with fans and some trainers in a lot of sports in this country we want results too quickly. Most sportsmen peek between the ages of 25 - 30. Fact yersel.![]()
You said that Mcneil basically wasn't warrented a shot at the title, he was just a last minute stand in, well he wouldn't have got a shot at the commonwealth title if he wasn't rated! The board wouldn't have passed it. Maybe Duran isn't the hardest puncher out there, but he can certainly hit harder than Gary Young i.m.o. I believe Mcneil wouldn't be scared to have a go with anyone, can't say the same about Gary, get him in with the likes of Glen Mclarnon, or someone who at least has a heart beat. Then at least we could see if he had anything to offer at a higher level. Too many young guys out there are just interested in keeping a clean record with no loses, even if it means fighting nobodies, I would rather fight for a title and lose that not fight for a title, cause even if you lose you still gained the experience.
Gary will eventually get a crack at a title and will get found out cause he's never had a test. But it's a waste of time debating it, let's just wait and see.![]()
That's why i've so much respect for Scott Harrison and,now ,Ricky Burns.Good, hard fights early in the career!Originally Posted by Top Dog

Gary Young's grudge match with Colin McNeil finally looks set to take place on April 29 in Edinburgh in an eliminator for the British welterweight title.
The Scottish rivals have been slated to meet for some time now, but have been unable to get it on for a variety of reasons.
But with McNeil back after serving a suspension for a doping offence and Young raring to go, they will now duke it out at the Meadowbank Arena, Edinburgh.
Alex Arthur tops the bill, but McNeil-Young could be in the running for fight of the night.
Young, 15-0, is being hailed as one of the future stars of boxing north of the border, while McNeil was a five-time Scottish amateur champion.
He recently challenged Ossie Duran for the Commonwealth title, losing on points, while Young has never gone beyond eight rounds before.
