Certainly is but I have heard (and I don't know how true it is) that Gerald had a blood clot before the fight but the brain scan wasn't compuslory then so he went into the fight with Benn with that time bomb waiting to go off. And with the bombs he took off Benn it was bound to burst and obviously did.

If this is true then the men behind the scenes who didn't enforce scans are to blame for this man being in such a state now.

Wow that was difficult to watch. I haven't saw the fight but that must of been some punch from Benn. This just reminds you what a cruel and dangerous sport it is, and no boxers have visited him since? That is terrible to hear.. not even Benn? You would think Benn would of been the first to visit.

It wasnt a single punch, and the stage for Gerald's brain trauma was already set before that fight, he was ahead on 2 of the judges scorecards and his brain gave out

    #1 Karma is a bitch

#2 If that fight took place in the US Gerald would have won via 1st Round TKO.

#3 The ref/corner/doctor should have stopped the fight when Gerald couldn't keep his mouthguard in

.....1st round TKO.....oh well sucks to be the G-Man

What he apparently did with them dogs was unforgiveable but it doesn't mean that he deserved this. He should have been given a hefty prison sentence and been banned from boxing. He is now suffering something that to me is worse than being dead!

Nigel Benn.... Limp, motionless, slumped into the ropes not capable of defending himself.... A spectacular 1st round Ko that never happened

Fuk that POS ref, who allowed Benn's constant rabbit punching in the back of the head and headbutts.

I get nauseous when I here people say Benn fought courageous, he was TKO'd in round 1 and cheated his ass off the rest of the fight, with a biased Ref who broke them apart numerous times to let Benn recover.. it was 2 on 1 that night

At least I can take Solace in the fact that Gerald was ahead on the cards when his body gave out in the 10th

That video is a few years old.

Last year - might have been 2007 - Benn held a massive fundraiser for him, they flew McClellan over to London and everything

Yeah, I watched a video shot a few days before the event yesterday. They interviewed Benn and he was almost in tears over it all, it was obvious he feels extremely guilty and I'd imagine anyone else would aswell.

I then decided to dig up the fight on youtube and wow what a fight, although I don't think the first round should of been a TKO.. I mean, only 2 solid punches connected to Benn before he fell through the ropes, and the rest of the round he did pretty well to avoid the rest of his flurries. But the ref was a bit of a cunt, almost always seeming to break the fight up to allow Benn to catch a swift breather.. never trust the french.

Take no notice of that crap. The ropes were stopping him from falling. Once he landed he got up with plenty of time.

A few years ago, before the fight was put on the net, certain people were seriously claiming Benn was given over 30 seconds to get back in the ring.. and the crowd were helping to carry him back

Thats one of the best fights of all time. Hands down. Its a crying shame that the tragedy overshadows it.

I see little wrong with the first round either, Benn was just about up okay.

By defenition a helpless fighter unable to intelligently defend himself taking clean uncontested shots, is the purest grounds for a fight to be stopped

You can watch that video 18 ways to texas and no one in there right man can argue that Benn wasn't done in that sequence, his hands were all the way down his body was lifeless and he was still getting punched, just like Castillo/Corrales1 Pavlik/Taylor 1. Furthered by the fact that the ref kept pushing McClellan away to the point were Gerald was trying to push him out of the way and pacheco was like WTF is the ref doing... It was a tasteless despicable display of home cooking that I have seen, just like what Marlon B Wright did to Andrade... The stinck from that fight still resonates 14 years later

Roy Jones Jr went to visit him.
