It wasnt a single punch, and the stage for Gerald's brain trauma was already set before that fight, he was ahead on 2 of the judges scorecards and his brain gave out

    #1 Karma is a bitch

#2 If that fight took place in the US Gerald would have won via 1st Round TKO.

#3 The ref/corner/doctor should have stopped the fight when Gerald couldn't keep his mouthguard in

What he apparently did with them dogs was unforgiveable but it doesn't mean that he deserved this. He should have been given a hefty prison sentence and been banned from boxing. He is now suffering something that to me is worse than being dead!

Nigel Benn.... Limp, motionless, slumped into the ropes not capable of defending himself.... A spectacular 1st round Ko that never happened

Fuk that POS ref, who allowed Benn's constant rabbit punching in the back of the head and headbutts.

I get nauseous when I here people say Benn fought courageous, he was TKO'd in round 1 and cheated his ass off the rest of the fight, with a biased Ref who broke them apart numerous times to let Benn recover.. it was 2 on 1 that night

At least I can take Solace in the fact that Gerald was ahead on the cards when his body gave out in the 10th

To the people who say that they can't forgive what he did, have a think about it,

Gerald was a product of his environment. He is no better nor worse than those before him, or young men of a similar situation today.

In boxing Gerald rose from the ghetto. He invested his life, his body and soul to our sport. He sacrificed nearly all vices in order to reach prominence.
He reatined one vice, dog fighting. An addiction surely, frowned upon by the majority, but a cult "sport" that has masses of followers even today.

Geralad McClellan was not the only one to partake in this sport. Not the first, not the last. He was a mere participant.
A participant, like all the others, that thinks this is an ordinary sport.

So, how can it be said that he doesn't deserve sympathy?

We love the sport, idolise its participants and recognise their sacrifices, but because they hold a differently mentality to our own we don't sympathise with them when they are life-shatteringly injured?
P[eople are all unique mentally, some deem different thinks acceptable.
Gerald and thousands like him see nothing unnatural about Dog Fighting.
He was raised this way, didn't choose his own path.
    Product of his environment.

I can't watch the videos anymore.
He was an awesome fighter, a huge prospect, a natural athlete and now his life is wasted.

I think its a bit of a cop out to absolve him of any blame due to his upbringing or his environtment.

What if he was a paedophile?
When God said to the both of us "Which one of you wants to be Sugar Ray?" I guess I didnt raise my hand fast enough

Being a paedophile would be a personal thing would it not?

Dogfighting, its a ghetto sport. Its undertaken in nearly every country.

I just feel that he can't be fully blamed for something that is a tradition among the people in his area.

Benn was back in the ring within 10 seconds of McClellan being pulled off of him (even if he hadn't the rules state that a fighter can be afforded extra time to re-enter the ring) Benn actually took 2 or 3 shots more than he should have because the ropes stopped him falling completely and the ref let McClellan keep punching. So that whole 1st round TKO theory is bollox imo.......however........... I do agree the referee was sh1te and should not have kept breaking them like he did, that was shocking refereeing

McClellan wasn't just into dog fighting he was sadistic.

His own relations described him as - frightening and extremely violent.

He would buy dogs from the pet shop, tape their mouths shut and let his pitbull rip them to bits. He shot his dog for losing a fight.

His former coach described the pleasure McClellan got from running over and killing a Flamingo bird at a shopping mall... so much so that he continued to circle the place killing loads of them.

I don't think any of this means he deserved to end up brain damaged. But he was a sicko.

I had heard things from reading around about McClennan, but I had never paid too much attention. Those acts are just horrible though, the flamingo thing sounds utterly bizarre.

The ref constantly pushing McClellan back and not letting him follow up on Benn really cost him in the end. Had Gerald followed up the fight would have been over, Benn was holding on for dear life.

As far as justice goes rjjtszyu, McClellan is imprisoned in his body and he ain't boxing anymore either so it's basically just as you described it.

Didn't Gerald have one dog that he loved....like litterally

I dont think Benn tried to cheat,he was trying to survive in there for large parts of the fight.

Benn did not try to use his head at any stage like Holyfield has been doing.

Benn was a boxer not a ref,its not up to him to stop a fight.

Both men fought there hearts out that night and Benn proved that he is a warrior in the truest sense.

We had this discussion a year or so ago and i said then that the last thing you wanna do as a fighter is tell anyone who'll listen that your "Gonna put Nigel Benn in a Wheelchair" before you face him.
No man on earth could have beaten Nigel that night.
