Yeah I think they're two parts of a different jigsaw.
I really think Gerald was a very troubleed young man.
I've heard first hand from a guy that trained with Lee in Kronk, that Gerald used to envision his father standing across the ring every time he fought.
This was confirmed in, if not this book another book addressing the subject.

but I interpret it as 2 separate incidents, because it seems contradictory to fuse them both together
