    Simple,its chess with fists.
Both fighters have to try and outhink the other while under extreme duress.
I like baseball for the same reason,I appreciate the strategy of the pitcher vs the hitter.
In boxing its rarely about just being able to whomp the other guy, youve got to outhink him as well.

i was brought up as a kid in a football dominated society but remember getting hooked on the sport at a very early age.

It causes excitement any game or sport cant quite live up to because no game of footie/NFL etc will ever match the intensity of 2 world class fighters beating the living hell out of eachother.

Those few moments before the fighters enter the ring...the passion....the intensity....the raw emotion you feel just cannot be simulated anywhere.

You dont have to ask yourself why you love the sport because millions also do and even those that dont still get excited about big fights because boxing represents something that just cannot be matched in everyday life!

There's lots of reasons, but I don't think we can deny that it appeals to our violent side. Lot's of people, not all but lots, watch boxing for the same reason they will stop to watch a street fight. It's exciting, it get the adrenaline pumping.

There is definitely a primal aspect to it. Oddly enough, I'll watching any boxing match I stumble across, but I hate everything about street fighting. I can't watch that sort of thing at all, it makes me sick.

Tha to everyone for their feedback, positive comments and rep.
Its good to hear some other views, and i thought itd be good to start a different kind of topic to all the type we've had lately where everyone just seems to wanna bag every fighter out.

Good question. Why I like a silver car but not a red one, why I like black pants or gray sweater; I really don’t know.
BoomBoom said “Its combat, its art, it creativity” Ok I agree, but why this kind of combat, why not another art?
Trainer Monkey gave us a good definition: “its chess with fists”, yes but why we like chess with fists? It’s quite impossible to answer.
    We like what we like.
Anyway for some of us could be just a matter of habit, we watched boxing for long time with ours daddies, or we have a big brother boxer, etc.
We just got habit with it like Australians with rugby and Americans with American football.

I havde always enjoyed boxing ever since the Gillette shaving people used to put on those Friday night fights when I was a child. My grandmother used to sit there every Friday and watch intently. I used to sneak out of bed and position myself behind the couch and watch all the greatest fighters go for that big prize and a chance at the big time. I was caught on many occasions and I started to protest my bed time on Friday nights and duck a whipping too. When I was old enough I was a decent featherweight but that was a long time ago and when you know first hand what these guys go through, you are not an ordinary fan. Thou art a fanatic and bring the fish and chips and bring the pizza and beer before the fight starts and plant your behind down and go to the bathroom between fights and not between rounds. The guys in that square hear your cheers and jeers because they know you are watching and they live for that and as a fan, so do I. I've got cable now and I still position myself in the living room but the couch and the remote are in my control. They are mine so until next weekend this fan is pumped up.

Its a gladiator sport, nobodys got a better engine, nobodys got 14 team mates to fall back on.

Yes you get your tactics, your training, your corner men, But when that bell rings its just you and him in the ring in the same size gloves, only your talent and hunger to prove to everybody your the best.

Fuck me if that aint the best thing in the world i dont know what is. I just love sport and competition and in a fight its usually cut and dry as to whats happening. no ifs, no buts just fight it out, only 1 winner.

and as mentioned its just so simple, 2 men with gloves on goin for it, but its not is it, it really is at times like a game of chess, punches, counter punches, southpaw and all that. you know your boxing you can see all that happening infront of your very eyes.

but then you get 2 deranged animals in the ring who just wana slug it out like wild men. No chess there, no skill, no tactics as such, and yet just as entertaining if not even more so.

The fact that Margo "slaughtered" Cotto who in turn beat Mosley who in turn slaughtered Margo is what makes boxing my great love. Reminds me of when Barkley beat Hearns twice and then got beat by Duran who was demolished by Hearns. You gotta love it as it defies logic. That's part of the mystery as to why I love this thing.

As well, when I watch a white kid from a small town in Minnasota and a black kid from NYC beat the hell out of each other for 4 rounds and then hug one another at the end of the fight, a bit of a chill goes down my spine. I love that part of boxing.

Boxing kept me off the streets as a kid. The first day I stepped into the boxing gym I really hadnt followed the sport closely, it was more curiosity and the willingness to try to do something better for myself, while getting rid of some aggresion in a productive way. From that day on, ive been hooked. Boxing is like a drug. Its combat, its art, it creativity, its opportunity, and its the ultimate test of mental and physical toughness. There arent many things that can bring out persons inner fire like boxing. Plus, your encouraged to knock people out and put a beating on them. You get praise and money instead of jail time. You really cant beat that.

Great Topic, Eagle and your post is spot on from my viewpoint.

I like boxing for the reasons as said by Eagle and also things like the not knowing the outcome. The feelings you have(nerves) when your favourite fighter who you've always supported is in a dangerous fight (see Lennox Lewis in my case)

Alot of the time the build-up and anticipation is better than the fight but that is boxing IMO, the fight is almost secondary it's the drama and not knowing in the run-up - the different opinions and in some cases; the years of waiting.

Boxing is a 2 man sport - no need for team mates and you don't play every week - you lose its a long wait til the next fight. Everything hinges on the fight - loses are almost final, win and your fighter marches on.

I was kind of thinking along these lines
I'll use one of my own fighters as an example,my wife no less.
Against Cheryl, she was the obvious better physical specimen(no offense Cheryl, you know F.I.S.T. loves you)but she got cocky in there against Cheryl and stopped looking at the board the chess pieces were on,and Cheryl made her pay for it.
Boxing is one of the sports where it isnt enough to be the better physical specimen, youve also got to out think them as well
