Well I do believe that Shane knew he was taking roids and EPO back then with De La Hoya. First of all, for all of these high profile athletes to come out and say that they didn't know what they were putting in their bodies is absolute bullshit and I don't believe any athlete who says that. Especially someone like Shane who is a certified gym rat and grew up in the California gyms where steroids exploded.
Now, for a 37 year old man, his physique is pretty unbelievable. But I think he's probably just a gym rat that watches what he eats. And as far as him still being able to fight the best today at age 37? I think that is a byproduct of never really being inactive. Most of these guys that fall off of the face of the Earth after they turn 30 usually have long periods of inactivity where they don't fight or train in their off time. And that just speeds up the process. Guys like ODLH and what not, those guys don't train unless they're fighting so their ability erodes over time. And usually, those guys are just training to make weight when they do train. Mosley fights all the time and trains a lot too in his free time so he's been able to avoid the steep dropoff. Look at JMM, he's like 36 too, and he's still at the top.
So I really don't think that Shane's reemergence has anything to do with PEDs in this case. He had the style to beat Tony. Tony couldn't deal with the handspeed from the ring of the bell and it was very evident. Plus, Shane was tying him up and frustrating his offense. Shane had the perfect style and gameplan to beat Tony.
With all that being said, if a boxer really wanted to, he could take all of the better PEDs like IGF, HGH, or something like that without being caught. Yeah, steroids are still used but people aren't gonna wanna chance getting caught anymore especially when the newer generation of PEDs are practically undetectable and just as effective. There's not even a good test for HGH yet because your body naturally produces the stuff.
PEDs will always be a problem.
