I seem to recall there was a connection between Hannibal and Spain, damned if I remember what it was though. Maybe he was born there, or trained, or educated.

The Carthaginians conquered most of Spain and built lots of new cities. Cartagena was one of them (meaning literally 'Carthage' in the local dialect)

The grand mind and power behind all this expansion was Hannibal's father, and the city was named after their family - Hannibal, Hamilcar and Hasdrubal's surname was Barca ...... hence Barcelona.
