I don't really know, because I don't know what I'm doing, I'd kind of like to spar and do bag work with them if that's not a problem. The main reason I wanted them though was to spar. I think I know someone who is into boxing who will spar with me.

I just don't know if it's better to do bag work with thicker gloves or thinner ones, heavier ones or lighter ones, etc. I kinda like the idea of using thinner gloves to toughen my hands more but heavier gloves work your arms more right?
all of that is preference. and also you will have to consider things you will go through(like how your wrists will probably hurt and other things may hurt).

It depends on what kind of bag work you are doing (heavy, speed, double-end, etc.)

I mean it depends really on you. you said you dont know what your doing so you probably dont have the punches down pat? just walk through everything real slow and focus on everything that each part of your body is oing. I say to practice the punches because if your just an average person with no experience and start hitting a heavy bag, you'll probably hurt your hands. If this is the case then the bigger gloves would be better for you.
