I really liked the Jeremy Brett interpretation of Holmes. He had that amazing enunciation, and very distinct RP accent form. For me he is the definitive screen Holmes.

I worry about Guy Ritchie being at the helm of this new film though. I hope it turns out okay.

There is only one Sherlock Holmes and that is JEREMY BRETT!!!!
Amen. I enjoyed Rathbone but Lyle is correct (did I just say that?) before JB got ill - he was Holmes. He used to carry a book of the stories about with him ensuring the dialogue was exact. The illustrations often made it too screen. Gotta love that dedication to the canon. He had the height & the hollow look.

As much as I like robert downey jr, I don't see him as Holmes...at least he'll have the drug experience.

"From Hell" was a good movie that had Johnie Depp as an investigator who was was an opium and Absinth addict... I thought that was the one you were talking about also as it does bring the royal family into it...
The royal family's doctor killed the prostitutes to protect some sort of secret.. Maybe a baby/affair, or to protect the secret that one of the royal family member had syphilis or something.. But in the movie the doctor wasn't just doing the work of the royal family, but he was a real sadistic bastard that took pleasure in carving up the victims... He would ride around with the coachman and lure the prostitutes in with Grapes (a demonstration of wealth in those days), and then would poison/knock them out with Laudanum (opium tincture)... And there was an uproar when the investigator went to the authorities declaring that the victim's attacks looked like they had been done by a trained surgeon.. Because specific body parts were precisely cut out.. But Authorities weren't happy with that because they believed only quality men could become doctors and no doctor could ever be evil.. Such crimes could only be committed by a butcher or begger, or a "jew"..
But that movie didn't have any Sherlock Holmes stuff in it, and I remember there was a movie called "ripper" that came out a little bit before that I think which I havn't see, so that might be the one you saw..

Anyway on the new one, I'm a fan or Downey Jr and his movies are usually pretty fun, but Jude Law drives me totally insane.. He comes across like a petualant child brat in almost every one of his movies... Maybe it's just that piece of turd of a movie "Alfie",,, worst movie ever and there are very few scenes in that movie where if you had a gun , you woudln't shoot the television or shoot yourself so you don't have to watch another second of it..

    Maybe "Jack the ripper"
that was a good flick and bought stuff to light too about the Royal familys doctor being involved.
There is a thirty year old movie about Holmes trying to solve the Jack the Ripper case, featuring Christopher Plummer as Holmes, and James Mason as Watson. A good flick, I had to look up the name , it was called Murder by Decree.

Jude Law is a good choice. Downey Jr. could do well if he tries hard not to be funny. Really, really hard.

The thing Jeremy Brett did better than any actor I can think of is come across as genuinely aloof. His mannerisms and speech were spot on and there were times when he was very funny....

OK after much thought, I FINALLY figured out who would be a brilliant Sherlock Holmes.......

    ALAN RICKMAN!!!

And if not Holmes, he could play a great Moriarty.

But I will give Downey Jr. a chance to win me over...he is a good actor, I just am not sure if he could pull this one off.

Big repsect for that Lyle, guy was classic, he was even better than the old black and white Basil Rathbone movie series.
I read somewhere that he was suffering from depression about not being Holmes asfter it was cut and was convinced he was Holmes !! Poor guy commited suicide afterwards.

Go get it if you can , best bit of method acting ever.

Jeremy Brett died from heart failure, his heart valves having been scarred by rhumatic fever from earlier in his life. He was a manic-depressive though.

I own the entire Granada series, great stuff

It's not a cheap series but totally worth it! The two guys who played Doctor Watson and the fella who played Mycroft Holmes was also very good.
