Calzaghe fight called off after he injures left hand
LONDON (AP) -- Joe Calzaghe called off the July 8 defense of his WBO and IBF super-middleweight titles after re-injuring his left hand during training.
The unbeaten Welshman was hoping to follow up his thrilling victory over Jeff Lacy with a sellout contest at Cardiff's 75,000-capacity Millennium Stadium, although no opponent had been named.
Promoter Frank Warren said Thursday that Calzaghe, who has made 18 world title defenses, had re-injured the left hand he broke against Evans Ashira last September.
The injury also flared up during his lopsided decision over IBF champion Lacy in Manchester on March 4.
"Like everyone else involved in the promotion, I am really disappointed that Joe has had to withdraw because of this latest injury," Warren said. "After medical consultation he has been advised to rest, so we are looking at Joe returning to action in the autumn."
