Sports Valero says he has right to fight Pacquiao

MANILA, Philippines - Venezuelan lightweight champ and knockout artist Edwin Valero pressed his bid for a crack at Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao, saying his promotional pact with Top Rank guarantees a showdown with the world’s pound-for-pound king.

The WBC lightweight champion, unbeaten in 25 fights, also claimed that Pacquiao had previously assured him of a matchup in the future, according to BoxingScene.com.

“My fight with Manny Pacquiao is signed. It was one of the conditions that I gave to my manager, Jose Castillo, for me to sign with Bob Arum (Top Rank),” Boxing Scene’s Mark Vester, quoting Valero’s statement from SNOV, said.

Valero’ s name has not been mentioned among those being groomed as Pacquiao’s next foe after the latter demolished British hero Ricky Hatton in two rounds to claim the IBO light-welterweight crown last weekend. Aside from former pound-for-pound champion Mayweather and old rival Marquez, the Pacquiao camp is eyeing Miguel Cotto in a 147-lb showdown.

Valero insisted that the only way Pacquiao could walk away from their clash would be to retire.

“This is something that he (Arum) has not revealed to the press because the fight is not mandatory, in case Pacquiao walks away. But that is the only way to avoid the fight, if he leaves boxing. So I am relaxed and working to build my name for my opportunity. It was something that was spoken about with Pacquiao and he said yes. That was in January,” Valero said.

Valero, one of Pacquiao’s guests during his 30th birthday bash in General Santos City, said only he can give the Filipino champion a run for his money when it comes to power - not Ricky Hatton, Floyd Mayweather, Jr. or Juan Manuel Marquez.

“For now I imagine that they are going to fight the winner of Floyd Mayweather and Juan Manuel Marquez, but none of those fighters have the power to surpass his defense. I would be able to offer a much better fight than the one Hatton did. I only hope that Pacquiao gives me the opportunity. I would have no problem in moving up in weight (light-welterweight) to fight him,” Valero said.

Pacmans defence has proven to be solid lately, his chin has proven to be quite good, his speed is incredible and his power is deadly. I think valero is out gunned in every department.

Mate,i know that....analysis totally makes valero a non winner.What im after here is justice for VALERO.Please go over news article i posted and you will understand what im driving at.In addition ,all im saying is;VALERO can give MANNY a good fight compared to other boxers they are lining up.

PBF, JMM, Cotto, Mosely all have a chance of beating manny. Valero does not in my opinion coz i dont think his chin has been tested and i dont think he has the pure boxing ability to win. There is no mistake about Valeros power but fighting fire with fire has already been proven to be so many fighters downfall when fighting manny. You have to be able to box. Watch the JMM fights, JMM does not brawl with him...hes boxes and does this quite well. You need to hit and not get hit because the more you get hit the more chances of lights out. I also think you need to be able to get in and out of range effectively. Something PBF does very well and i do believe that once inside range, it may be possible to smother mannys power something PBF is also very good at. The more you stand back and try and exchange with pac, the more momentum he gets and the more confidence he gets. Work the jab, get inside and get out. That is the gameplan to beat pac in my opinion because I still think pacs power lies in having enough space to unload his big left and right hooks.

Beg to disagree mate.At 140 lbs,Manny is invincible.PBF,JMM,COTTO MOSELY will fight only to survive a KO.On the other hand VALERO has a chance if he can land a HAYMAKER.

I stand on my original position that VALERO should be given a chance to fight PACQUIAO this year.Otherwise it will be obvious that VALERO is being avoided.
