Cheers for advice guys.
I hadn't played it for about a week but nothing out of the ordinary had happened. I let the system automatically update when it kicks in every once in a while.
The thing never moves. There are quite a few people with same issue on the net out there - many from changing the drives themselves, but many like me too. There is a recovery menu that people say to use, this reformats the hard drive, but mine can't even get to that - again there are people out there in same position.
Am in market for a new tv at moment too so may see if any are doing a free ps3. I can survive without the saved data as I just used to stream most of my music and films to it from my pc anyway rather than store.
Will have lost all my unlockables and progress from games though which will be a pain.
If it was just £70 I would have no hesitation in paying it but I can't help getting the feeling I am getting ripped off at £145.
Don't bully fat kids - they've got enough on their plate

You got what they call on the PS3 "Bricked" It is common to the PS3 like the Red Rings of Death is to the 360. Make sure you transfer all existing files to another Hardrive by Cord or transfer to flashdrive.
You need to send the PS3 for repairs and more than likely they will send you a refebrished console. It really depends if you have still have it covered under warranty, Check your states lemon laws too. If it is not cover under the above. It will be bettter just to buy the newest High gig version console. Hope this helps

That's the problem of hard drive, it can be corrupted
I have a different problem when it accidentally fell from the rack when my son got tangled with the cords while playing beside me.
The cd drive wont spin, it could be your case so it gives false reading. I kept on restarting the f*&^ing unit until it finally able to read again.
Sorry if this won't help

One screw and the hard drive can slot out, it's a star type screw head but you can get it out with a slotted driver. You are bound to be able to get another one on ebay or something with the SONY operating system installed.
Seems like bad design from Sony... on my Xbox you can just pop it off like a memory card almost.
