the reason Zarquawi was so hated in Iraq was basically for three reasons. He was a foreigner (Jordan), he was a Sunni who declared war on Shias (remember most Iraquis are Shias), and he attacked civilians.

The rumor is that he was even on the outs with the other groups. the other groups were home grown and they did not like the attack on the shrines and civilians. It is widely speculated that the home grown groups provided much intelligence toward the location of Zarquawi.

there is more than meets the eye to this story. My spidey sense tells me that there was some heavy duty back room deals with this one. First, the US military knows where Zarquawi is, at the same time 17 other operations against terrorist hideouts take place. Lastly the Sunnis accept the cabinet as proposed within minutes after everything goes down.

I think the Sunnis saw the writing on the wall and gave the Americans and the SHias Zarquawi in exchange for cementing their position in the new parliament. Again, think...immediately after the attacks the parliament is completed. A political deal was made, the SUnnis delivered the beheader.
