Never can tell these days, I think Pacquiao Vs Cotto could come close if it came off due to the extreme popularity by both fighters

I know Fedor's contract with Affliction is almost up and Dana White has now come out and said he's going to sign him to the UFC, and since the heavyweight division is by far the weakest and Brock will continue to destroy everyone put in front of him and since it's widely assumed that Fedor would likely beat him, I think that is undoubtedly the biggest fight that could be made in MMA (aside from Silva-GSP) and knowing they would promote that more heavily than anything we've ever seen I wouldn't be surprised if that broke it. I also think that in a few years a UFC ppv will be the first to reach 3 million ppv's.

For next 18 months it's safe. I say the record is safe until 2 dominant and exciting HWs break it.

The thing that bgets me about the PPV record is Mayweather actually thinks he was the draw, hence his reason for not fighting Mosley

I don't think that this record will be surpassed any time soon. Here is why I say this:

From my personal experience of this fight, my girlfriend at the time was having friends over for it. We had an absolutely packed living room, 15-20 or so people. Compared to ANY other "big" fight, I normally watch it with 3 or 4 friends maximum. There was just a lot of hype and curiosity for this fight and the average person was intrigued for some reason.

Also, this fight was being showed at a local "casino" in the auditorium area on the big screen. Admission was charged and what not. Every bar was showing this fight, also. ANY other fight, even the big ones, are not shown at bars around here. UFC is shown at TWO bars that I know of, but the chance of boxing being showed is VERY slim.

Everyone was talking about this fight.. Everyone was curious who would win, and I don't think that any two, or even ONE fighter has the ability to attract this type of crowd any time soon.

Cotto isn't extremely popular or well-known to the mainstream US sportsfan. He can draw good ticket sales in New York, but he is not a nationwide PPV draw.

Pacquiao-Cotto will be lucky to reach 1 million PPV buys, let alone 2.4 million.

Doesn't mean it's not a great fight, but it's not a big PPV seller in the mold of Floyd-Oscar.

I agree 100%. In order to break that record you have to draw on the non boxing fan. Many will say Cotto who?

Yep it's definitely safe for 18 months. Manny Mayweather won't beat it. Hopefully it gets smashed some time in the future.

I don't see that happening for a LOOOOONG TIME! People don't even know that division exists anymore...

That record should be safe for YEARS!!! Unless there's a new Oscar or Tyson coming through that ive missed?

As Sweetpea said - a fight like Cotto-Pac will be lucky to get near a million. Cotto did around 350,000 with Mosley and 450,000 with Margarito. Decent numbers but light-years from being a crossover star.

Floyd and Pac both did under 1 million with Hatton. No chance they will get near it.

Floyd and Pac should do at least 1.5 million ppvs but no where close to 2.4 mil of the Oscar-Floyd fight.

And regarding MMA, I don't see it surpassing the 2.4 number when they have only 1 or 2 UFC events that only surpass 1 mil number recently.

The best bet for boxing is going to be Heavyweights. They always bring in the "casual" fans. Your gonna need to 2 huge punchers. Before the UFC became popular I think either Tyson and/or Holyfeild were involved in every single top 10 grossing PPV of all time (until De la Hoya vs. Trinidad broke thru).

Hispanics are the largest group of PPV buying boxing fans. Maybe Arreola could become "Gatti Like" (RIP) and become a huge draw. I bet Chris vs. one of the Klitscho's would do big numbers if they built it up over the next few month.

I agree. There is nobody on the radar at the moment that could generate the kinds of numbers that DLH could.

Just out of interest, what were the numbers for the Pac-Dela Hoya fight?

To beat the record for PPV buys, you would probably need two AMERICAN'S fighting each other somewhere north of 140.
