I agree sir. To have big numbers the story has to be as big if not bigger than the fight itself. Good vs evil. Manny is the good guy and PBF as the asshole. Both can play that role very well.

Cotto isn't extremely popular or well-known to the mainstream US sportsfan. He can draw good ticket sales in New York, but he is not a nationwide PPV draw.

Pacquiao-Cotto will be lucky to reach 1 million PPV buys, let alone 2.4 million.

Doesn't mean it's not a great fight, but it's not a big PPV seller in the mold of Floyd-Oscar.

I agree 100%. In order to break that record you have to draw on the non boxing fan. Many will say Cotto who?

Yep it's definitely safe for 18 months. Manny Mayweather won't beat it. Hopefully it gets smashed some time in the future.

I don't see that happening for a LOOOOONG TIME! People don't even know that division exists anymore...

That record should be safe for YEARS!!! Unless there's a new Oscar or Tyson coming through that ive missed?

As Sweetpea said - a fight like Cotto-Pac will be lucky to get near a million. Cotto did around 350,000 with Mosley and 450,000 with Margarito. Decent numbers but light-years from being a crossover star.

Floyd and Pac both did under 1 million with Hatton. No chance they will get near it.

Floyd and Pac should do at least 1.5 million ppvs but no where close to 2.4 mil of the Oscar-Floyd fight.

And regarding MMA, I don't see it surpassing the 2.4 number when they have only 1 or 2 UFC events that only surpass 1 mil number recently.

The best bet for boxing is going to be Heavyweights. They always bring in the "casual" fans. Your gonna need to 2 huge punchers. Before the UFC became popular I think either Tyson and/or Holyfeild were involved in every single top 10 grossing PPV of all time (until De la Hoya vs. Trinidad broke thru).

Hispanics are the largest group of PPV buying boxing fans. Maybe Arreola could become "Gatti Like" (RIP) and become a huge draw. I bet Chris vs. one of the Klitscho's would do big numbers if they built it up over the next few month.

I agree. There is nobody on the radar at the moment that could generate the kinds of numbers that DLH could.

Just out of interest, what were the numbers for the Pac-Dela Hoya fight?

To beat the record for PPV buys, you would probably need two AMERICAN'S fighting each other somewhere north of 140.
