Miguel Cotto needs those extra pounds a lot more then Mayweather does. I would hate to see Cotto fight below 147, it just seems like it's the right weight class for him and he looks much better and fights much smarter at 147.

I agree with this. I'd like to see the Pac-Cotto fight at 147 as most fairly neutral fans would, considering what is on the line. But I have to hand it to Roach, love him or hate him for it, it was a nifty smoke and mirror trick to bring up the 143 possibility to have the fans take kinder to 145. He wants his guy to win, and is obv trying to get any edge.
Also agree about the no belt on the line making a diff. in the negotiations too for the Mayweather fight, plus his ability to fight leaner.

I could care less about the belts tbh. Boxing fans should disregard the alphabets entirely, and not just bring them up when it's to their advantage. Is this Cotto's WBO title people are talking about?

So none of you have a problem with this catchweight fight at all......and yet...........![]()
the silence has been a bit deafening on this one.
there are different circumstances (especially if Manny calls for 143 or nothing as that's probably a bit too much for Cotto where Floyd can probably make 143 ok) but I don't think Cotto making 145 is gonna kill him. Of course everyone can make up their minds on fight night.

My only issue with the fight is the fact that Marquez is gaining an awful lot of weight for a man of his size and age. But it's his choice to take that risk and for that his courage deserves respect.
Mayweather doesn't seem like the type of fighter to ever be out of condition, so I struggle to see shedding down to 143 as being particularly problematic. He's a little like Judah in that he is a small WW and I can see him being quite comfortable at JWW if that's where he truly wanted to be.
I struggle to see the case for Mayweather as weight drained or Marquez as coward.

Is that 300 k for every "unofficial" lb over the 143 mark on fight night? That would be interesting....how did Marquez look in his last fight at Jr.Welt.

There's a big difference between the two situations though. One is a fighter coming up in weight, the other involves one coming down. One is (apparently) for part of the welterweight championship of the world, the other is just a regular fight (relatively speaking).
There's a big difference between the two situations, but then again I haven't seen anyone say that JMM is going to be at his best above 140 (or even 135 for that matter), so it's not like this aspect is being ignored, it's just a fight that isn't as popular as a Pac- SMM or Pac - Cotto fight and as such it doesn't evoke as much response.
