You guys bitching and moaning about the weight and split can save it. No one forced Cotto to take the fight. He has a team of negotiators who settled on those terms with the Paquiao camp. If Cotto and his team are satisfied with the terms, then there's no reason anyone else should care. 145 is a welterweight fight by definition, period. It's perfectly legitimate for the belt to be at stake and Cotto doesn't have a problem with it.
You have a good point about alphabet belts.
An underappreciated aspect is that Cotto is agreeing to the catchweight, and all that it entails. Is he not? Last I heard, Cotto said he has no problem at all coming in a couple pounds underweight. Something that Cotto fans and opponents of the catchweight neglect to consider. As clubber points out.
I'm with lefty on this one. 145/146/147, no big deal, according to Cotto himself. Come fight time it won't really matter.
Cotto takes a few good shots to the end of his chin and goes down for the count, before the fight is half over.
it's simple, Manny wants to be a welterweight, fight a real welterweight at welterweight, so many people bitching about Mayweather handpicking opponents, but when you're basically "willing" to take on anyone but have it be at a catchweight like Pacquiao is doing, it's just as bad
Too chicken?!! You guys are unreal. Manny started at 112 and hopped up from 135 to take a fight with De La Hoya, a fight most people said he would get killed in. He is also moving up again to fight Cotto, a fight that would have been laughed at a year ago. To the poster who said it was no different than Mayweather, BS. Mayweather makes smaller men come up to him. Manny is going up to meet the bigger guys. To call him chicken is just flat out stupid.
The only logical conclusion to this is that the world gets behind Cotto and hope he ends Manny once and for all. Manny is cashing out anyway, he is probably overweight and paying for serfs to serv him grapes and play him videos of the Barrera fights. Little does Manny know that his time is almost numbered and I hope it's as brutal as can be.
Hey Cotto and PAC can negotiate and fight at whatever weight they agree to that's fine, that's not the problem I have with this. MY problem is that this is for a title. It is not up to PAC and Cotto to determine what the welterweight limit is. If it's going to be for a welterweight title Cotto should be able to come in at the WW limit. Everything else the purse split, and all other negotiations, I could care less about. It should be a great fight and entertaining, but it shouldn't be a title fight. If PAC wins it's not like he's going to defend the title anyway.
For every story told that divides us, I believe there are a thousand untold that unite us.
The weight limit is NOT what makes this a welterweight fight. It is a welterweight fight because it is a fight over 140 and below 147. That is the definition of a welterweight fight. Period. That means the belt being at stake is perfectly legit. And, yeah, Pac may not defend it but it is a big deal because if he wins he's the first 7 division champion.
that's the main thing that pisses me off, if Manny actually wins the title what is gonna do? call for bullshit catchweights for every fucking title defense? he needs to man up and fight a full fledged welter who's able to make the limit especially when that full fledged welterweight is champion
For every story told that divides us, I believe there are a thousand untold that unite us.
It's both a catchweight fight AND a welterweight fight. It falls within the welterweight limit with the maximum weight allowed moved down two pounds. But it still qualifies as a welterweight fight because it's below 147 and above 140. And remember, Cotto weighed 146 against Clottey so I really don't see one more pound as a big deal. Cotto agreed to it and has made clear he doesn't see it as an issue, so I don't know why anyone else should.
