Agree completely, I've grown up around people like this & in the most part they are nasty pieces of work.
The guy I mentioned in the previous post was virtually no different to Lenny McLean, but because of a romanticization of 60s mobsters, McLean is seen as a 'hard bastard, real sound top fella', whilst Sparks is seen (rightly) as a one man crimewave & vicious killer. Not all criminals & fighters are like that, but McLean (& I have to admit I enjoyed his book) was a bully who knew it. He was not one of these guys standing up for the little guy & the picked upon. Fact.
