The tendency for boxers to lash out at mixed martial arts seems to be a proven formula for athletes in the “sweet science” to get headlines from the sport that has been dominating the pay-per-view market over the last few years. Torres admits that boxing is a dying breed and taking pot shots at MMA may just be that they are trying to hit one last Hail Mary punch on the way down.

“It’s fear and it’s a lack of knowledge. They’re so stuck in their small world they have no idea what they’re talking about,” said Torres. “Even boxing fans that are huge fans of boxing, they’re talking to me about ‘well, if you were a real fighter you’d box,’ I’m like, are you serious? I tried with guys who just boxed, and if I give them a hard time just boxing, imagine if I could kick, elbow, and take them to the ground, it would be a totally different fight.”

With Torres scheduled for his next title bout on Aug. 9, and Mayweather slated to return to boxing in September, nobody should hold their breath that these two will ever see each other in a mixed martial arts fight, but the WEC champion still dreams of a day when he could finally silence “Money Mayweather.”

“The times that I’ve watched him box is to want to watch him lose, because I just didn’t like his attitude and the way he acted very much,” Torres said. “He’s never going to change. I think the only way he will change is if he steps in the cage and gets his mouth shut.”

It proves he's in his own little world too & doesn't know what he's talking about either. If boxing/striking is a component of MMA, why would that be dying? The very fact that having great boxing skills/power can help make being a top MMA fighter easier will ensure the need for top boxers & boxing coaches.

Fighters in the future may still choose boxing because they don't care for the wrestling aspect of MMA or the fact most/all MMA fighters have some terrible looking ears. For top boxers, can you really tell by looking @ their face that they're a fighter?

It's hard to keep up these days, everyone talks shit about apples yet everyone is shelling out cash to buy apple pie's. This sport is strange i thought everyone wanted to fight the best ??!!! As a side note is mma running out of fighters or something ?? They seem way more concerned about whats going on in boxing instead of worring about thier own sport. If mma is so popular why are they and thier fans always riding the teet of boxing.

You're right, they do seem to go out of their way to say boxing is dying. Why is that? If MMA is so great & popular, what do they care what boxing is doing, there's not room for both sports?

I noticed that the MMA world is more concern with boxing than it is the other way around. In the boxing world you may have the occasional insult here and there but man the MMA world is always going on about boxing is dying, it's boring, the boxing stars are crap, blah blah blah.

Just go on any MMA website and half of it's content is about talking shit on boxing.

That's good to read because on sports radio whenever they're talking about a big UFC card coming up, MMA fans call in to talk about it & take swipes @ boxing - the usual, it's a dying, boring sport, etc. They must get that from the # of articles I've read on boxing sites where the writer hypes MMA & more than not, claims boxing is dead.

Good point but I wonder what's up with some of the writers? I'm always happy if I can read an article about MMA without the writer getting @ least one dig @ boxing in the process.
