There is a consistent history of boxing suicides. While there were undoubtedly other determining factors surrounding his death, boxing is a very mentally demanding, almost debilitating, sport.

When you step through those ropes, you're putting your life/livelhood/reputation on the line more so than in any other sport. If a footballer has a bad game, he will probably still get picked for the next match - if a boxer performs badly in a big fight, he is potentially finished; the mental pressure is immense. So a bad defeat or even the pressure to succeed can have deep psychological effects.

Perhaps there should be more stringent psychological tests to assess a fighter's mental state: regularly, say every 6 months. I think it's definitely something the BBBC should look into.

    P.S.- R.I.P. Darren.

Awful news, very very sad to hear. Thoughts and prayers with his family. Rest in peace Darren. Such a bright prospect and talent.

Depression in athetes, particularly fighters, is something that needs to be adressed. Nicolas Cervera who also suffered from depression took his life too not long ago and Alexis Arguello too. Also countless others. Depression was also the major contributer to the deaths of many, many fighters over the year. This is something that has been going on for a while, but I dont want to see these tragedys happen anymore. Nobody does. As a fighter and a man, it is hard to be open to others about sad feelings and suicidal thoughts. There is a stigma attached to it in this culture. Men who suffer from depression generally become self destructive, rather than seek help. That should not be the case. Nobody should have to feel that way. That is why the percentage of males that attempt suicide sucessfully are staggering and a lot higher than females. This is a topic that needs to be put in the light and discreet resources should be available for people like Darren. Depression is a chemical imbalance in the brain that can be treated with the right medication/s and therepy. It is not a character flaw. Its not a personality type, and it does not define the man or women that it attacks. Its a problem that can be solved..in this lifetime.

WHEN THE BRIGHT LIGHTS FADE TO BLACK

After the bright lights of the Olympic stage, the light fades to black.

After the roar of the crowd and the welcome home fades, the only
three words left are rest in peace.

DARREN SUTHERLAND - another tragic boxing story and his name is on the wall of the "Lost Warriors" with no time to say goodbye.

Was an amazing prospect and despite him being Irish and me being English, he was my favourite of the Olympians to come through. Not only for his attitude but how good he was to watch.

I can't believe this - Darren Sutherland, for me had the most potential as a pro out of all of the olympians. This is so sad

Only saw him on Friday for the Fury fight - He was all smiles but that never tells the full story.

Been told he was the nicest guy also as he was in the same stable as my friend Larry. He's devastated too.

Condolonces to all of his family and friends.

    Shocked...RIP Darren
