There are a lot of people who could beat a prime Tyson...when you look back on his career he fought a bunch of bums. Sure Tyson was a great boxer but he's no where near the best...not even in the top ten.
Would you have said that if you were asked straight after the Spinks fight?
Yes because Spinks although he "beat" Larry Holmes twice he was mainly a cruiserweight/light heavyweight.

Could Spinks have beaten ANY all-time great power puncher?

Riddick Bowe might have been lazy and wanted to eat a lot but when he was in top form he was damned near unbeatable a PRIME Evander Holyfield will tell you that

Prime Mike Tyson could have KO'd Riddick Bowe within 8 rounds imo.

Bowe's chin was too good, he boxed too well, and he had heart as shown in the trilogy with Holyfield. He would use the 1-2 to distance himself from Tyson and use the uppercut to knock him down and out.

Yes a Prime Mike Tyson was a good unique heavyweight but he had his short comings which no one tends to see because they are oooh-ing and aaah-ing over his KO's...he never got close to KO-ing anyone of Bowe's talent level.

Fair enough if thats your view - I just think a lot of people pay too much attention to Tyson post 96 and their views are tainted by that. If he is being judged on where he stand all time, imo, it should only be based on his prime

Keep in mind eddie futch picked holy to beat tyson way back when they were both undefeated. Bowe is iddicult to gauge because his prime and desire was so short. I certainly think Mike could win but i think it would be interesting as mike never fought anyone with the technical and Power of Bowe. Pleae add your thoughts relstice thoughts not mike destroys him or riddick dominates, I am not biast either way just think it makes for a very interesting matchup, certainly mike has better power than evander did but he certainly could not take the shots evander did if it came to that, but who knows mikes defense was much much greater, but i belive bowe is a far far cry from spinks a fighter bowe would moslt likely ko in 1-2 rounds
You're spot on Pacdog, this would be a great match up, and arguments can be made for who beats the other. Tyson never fought no one like Bowe when he was at his best and vice versa. Bowe was a great fighter at his best and certainly had the tools and although i'd like to edge towards Tyson i just don't know. Good shout.

you might be on to something there but I think that's the post-prison tyson....When he had all the trainers-Atlas, Rooney, D'amato's ghost he was unbeatable...and freaky fast with devastating power....I think it's one of those "What ifs" followed by a "Man, I wish I could see that fight happen" kind of question....
It feels good to be back home.

Bowe EASILY had all the equipment to do what James douglas did ....and could have possibly ESPECIALY on that day in tokyo

however!! i have two reasons to support why tyson could have won...read carefully lol

1 -James could take a punch he had a great chin...,And for a tall man was good at throwing those inside uppercuts and fighting inside ...i think this would work against him ...he would take some of Tysons flurrys and hooks while laying against the rope and EVEN THOUGH HE COULDA WON being able to counter and move ...a ref wouldnt let him take too much punishent and Wave it off as a tyson TKO

2-mainly because of tysons people (Custamato, jimmy jacobs etc) tyson was a judges pet ...he was very much on the inside of the behind the scenes boxing world
and people liked him and if he went 12 rounds he woulda won even a controversial decision...people and judges WANTED mike to be there champ and wouldnt easily let him lose a decision

I think the reasons why Tyson could beat Bowe were Evander couldn't. 1. He had the power which could have ko'ed Bowe that Evander didn't have. He had a little more speed than Evander had.

Your right . A prime Tyson was very instinctive and had cat like reflexes. the power was natural a raw enhanced with lighting speed. .

young Tyson was him in his prime... when he used head movement, and combinations... HOlyfield didn't use head movement against Bowe, and if Tyson could get in on Holmes he could get in on the slower Bowe who didn't have as good of a jab. I think prime Tyson could do well against any heavywieght except maybe Lennox Lewis prime because Lewis did have that jab, but with power and a great straight right to boot.

The D'mato style was great but it was crap against guys who could move, guys who could jab, and HELLO RIGHT UPPERCUT! That was not post prison that's just D'mato's style it wasn't even JUST Tyson, look at Patterson he had the same troubles.

    1. And Riddick Bowe didn't have a chin?

    2. VS Riddick a guy who carried his power for a full 12 Tyson would have been KO'd no doubt about it. Mike got progressively worse as the fight goes on and everyone knows it, even in his prime.

As for Tyson's bully tactics look how much of a bully Bowe was vs Tillery.
