Is the Royal family not independently wealthy?

At an earlier news conference, Queen Elizabeth II’s accountant, Sir Alan Reid, Keeper of the Privy Purse, pleaded with the British government for an extra £1 million a year, or about $2 million, to help fix the Windsors’ roof. “The annual cost per person in the country of funding the head of state amounts to 62 pence,” he said, somewhat apologetically. “There is good evidence that we continue to pursue value for money in running the royal household.”

This is from from the New York Times in 2007....apparently not so independant.

It is estimated that the Queen has an estimated wealth of $650, 000, 000....I don't think she has really earned all that in her life time of visiting countries trying to appease heads of state and making public speeches. She has all that wealth and she can still claim 62 pence per British person to fix her repairs and buy her gandchildren presents? It's a bit much for even any apologist of the Royal family.

No, I don't think we should. Whilst they are largely insignificant for me & I'm no fan, they are both good for economy & more importantly they mean something to a substantial number of British people. So yeah, I believe we should keep them.

people complain about the money they take from taxes but they bring multiple times that back into the country

they give england an identity, which attracts millions of tourists every year, it creates jobs for many many people both directly and indirectly

England would lose out massively financially and culturally if the royal family was abolished

It's not about socialism either. It's about what is right.

The Royal family has no relevance, do you not see this? They have huge homes and wealth and still they claim from the taxpayer. You earn fuck all per hour and they are still taxing you....and yet you think this is okay....after all they were here first?

Don't blame it on the hippies or the socialists...blame it on your own piss poor system and blame your monarchy as well. They are to blame. And yet you want the monarchy? They provide nothing.

Legally and historically talking, they are irrelevant. They could disappear that the democratic REgime would still work damn fine in most case. In Belgium it is a bit different but it is all another case, maybe here Albert is kinda gathering the country in one piece but once the situation will be fixed over here, the King doesn't have much significance neither. As for England.. well, they are used as promotion tool from time to time but that is all. I wouldn't advocating to give them the guillotine but I would certainly be in favor that the State stops to give them any high royalties though.
