Manny has come a long way, and is a different animal to the fighter that drew with JMM the first time around. I dont fully understand how he manages to defy the laws and move through the weights and still look the naturally stronger fighter.
Taking Manny's ridiculous handspeed and accuracy, amazing angles, and excellent set of whiskers as read, what impressed me the most in the Cotto fight was his pacing of the rounds. He set traps, showed cute feints, then unloaded with punches in bunches. He doesnt look to steal rounds in the 1st or last minute like Oscar for example, but more to inflict as much damage as he can with those bursts and lead rights and short left uppercuts through the middle. Very, very impressed with Manny. I'm a Cotto fan and have all of Cotto's fights on DVD, I've been a fan for a long time, but never thought Manny could do that to him. I appreciate Cotto does have an issue cardio wise in the later rounds, but he usually dictates the pace and has enough left in the tank. Tony didnt allow him that time, neither did Manny.
Manny reminds me a bit of Tito, once Trinidad was finished with you, the rest of your career was never the same. Hopefully this wont be the case with Cotto.
As for Mayweather v Manny, it's a whole different ball game. You have the opitome of defensive genius up against the proverbial offensive firestorm. I just feel Mayweather will be too cute. The speed factor is still tipped in Mayweather's favour for me. Not since Meldrick Taylor have I seen faster hands, and I think this is where the fight will be won. I just think Floyd with the notable reach advantage will always be in range, and will make Manny pay for any missed shots. I also see Floyd dictating the fight on his terms.
Boxing is all about styles and levels, and for me, Mayweather redefines the level. Taking the obvious weight and size advantage out of the equation, I think Mayweathers technically brilliant performance against JMM showed exactly what I mean when talking about levels. Along with Hopkins and Floyd, for me, JMM has always been in my eyes, one of the most intelligent fighters of the modern era. Marquez, (with the John fight open to debate), has always used his savvy to find the answers. And he has done it against the very best. Against Floyd, he looked out of his depth in the this regard, and was subsequently beaten like a ginger step-son. I really dont think there are many fighters out there that out-thinks JMM. Mayweather made it look easy in that regard.
Two great fighters, both in their prime. I'm not sure in my 25 years of following the game, if there has ever been a bigger fight than this. And as much as I respect everything that Manny stands for and brings to the table, I just cant see him winning this fight. When you talk about defining fights, I think this is the one that will really cement Floyd as one of the true, all time, pound for pound greats. Floyd by UD.
Just my 2 cents ........
