So is it BJ? He's gotta be on the short list but if not him, who?

Not even so much who's the best striker exactly cause you have kicks, knees, elbows, etc., Just the boxing.
When I think of the best boxer in MMA, BJ Penn doesn't even come to mind. Perhaps it's because his greatest wins have always been submissions.

I'd say guys like Stephan Bonnar, Gregard Mousassi and a few others bring that thought to mind. There are many others that come to mind but those two stick out to me. Of course, Chuck Liddell has to be mentioned when the conversation is "boxers in MMA" just by his dominance in the cage with his hands from the past.
BJ keeps things standing these days though unless he hurts somebody and wants to take them down. His hands are why you see all these guys trying desperately trying to take him down. He's just too good striking. I think of him as one of the top boxing skills guys cause he just has good conventional boxing, keeps his hands up and jabs better than almost any other MMA guy. Plus he has a pretty tight compact straight right hand.

BJ has the best jab I've ever seen in MMA. He handled Sean Sherk with the jab better then some boxers could have done it. Rampage has really good boxing skills, he actually trained with Jeff Mayweather before, and that's what he used to exploit Chuck Liddell's stand up. Rashad I don't think is as good of a boxer especially on the defensive side of things, but he does have fast hands and has put together some good real flashy combos.

I thought he was one of the best, but after the Strikeforce Miami PPV i'd have to say Nick Diaz is the best boxer in MMA.

Diaz looks so open, and he is in a lot of ways, but his volume gets people playing defense so much that they don't throw in between his shots enough.

But he is good at keeping distance, he has good punch variety, as good as any really, and he's the best body puncher in the sport. I do think, even though he still gets a bit sloppy, that his striking looked improved tonight.

His open, but offensively he is one of the best strikers in MMA. I agree with yu aout him being the best body puncher. His body shot that felled Shamrock was a peach of a punch.
