Should states stop licensing Roy Jones if (when) he loses?

I've said it 1000 times if I said it once. And I hate to have to suggest this because I truly believe that Roy Jones was the Muhammad Ali of my generation when he was in his prime. No one else in our generation displayed such a combination of power, speed, and flashiness...in and out of the ring.

That being said this has got to stop. I've seen alot of boxers get the message after they lose 2 or 3 fights. Even De la hoya got the message...finally. But it doesn't seem to be sinking in with Roy. 4 out of his 5 REAL losses he got whalloped. Especially Joe Calzaghe. Roy was beaten up all night that night. And I figured his last fight he would have gotten the message. I never thought someone like Roy could be beaten inside of 1 round. And now he's moving onto Hopkins? If he keeps going down this road Roy is really going to get himself hurt. How long before the higher ups here make him stop? Hopkins will beat him and I'm sure he'll schedule another fight after that. Let me know what you think.

I'm not going to disagree that Roy needs to seriously consider hanging up the gloves -- and I hate that he's feeding B-Hop's ego by giving him the fight that he's always wanted (against a defenseless Roy Jones Jr.). That being said I think the real tragedy here isn't that RJJ is still fighting but it's that he has to keep fighting.

By all accounts Roy isn't exactly the most financially stable boxer in the world -- having sunk quite a bit of money into his record label (raise your hand if you bout the RJJ debut rap cd because I know I did). The worst part about hsi fight with B-Hop if you believe Thomas Hauser (and why wouldn't you) is that RJJ might not end up making much of anything (if anything at all) on the fight.

Here's hoping that we don't see the RJJ story end in tragedy because during his height he was easily my favorite fighter and even today it's tough to not be excited by him simply because he still looks like Roy Jones Jr. even if he isn't Roy Jones Jr. anymore.

No unless the fighter is unfit to box he should carry on. If Holyfield can get a license then Roy should be able to get one too.

Not at all, he has a right to box and make any money that comes his way. If he scrambles his brains then that's for him to decide.

Of course we as the general public can choose not to watch. I think the last Holyfield fight I watched was vs. Larry Donald in 2004 and the last RJJ fight I seen was Calzaghe.

Definitely no. He shouldn't be deprived a source of livelihood. But he should be fighting low caliber boxers, anyone way lower than B-Hop.

I think if Roy is KO'd, he should at the very least be denied his license in the States, similar to how New York banned Evander from fighting anymore, and Evander has fought fewer pro fights and his KO losses were not nearly as brutal. Yes, Roy has a right to make a living, but states have a right to deny someone as well. I mean do you really want to see Roy like this again:

If he was getting hammered from pillar to post every other week then sure. But he is still capable of defending himself and competing inside a boxing ring.

I think Amir Khan should have his license taken away too. There is just no excuse for losing in a round.

Actually, I wouldn't be surprised to see Jones put up a decent showing against Hopkins. It sure won't be another 1 round stoppage.

The truth of the matter is HBO has no interest in showing RJJ fight anymore. GBP is putting on a PPV with will most likely flop and lose GBP a lot of money, RJJ will walk away with maybe enough money to buy a new pair of shoes because of his contract with Hopkins/GBP. After that IF he loses that fight there will be very little willingness by Vs., Telemundo or ESPN2 to put him on TV. Once the TV options are gone he will have no real value to even B level opposition. So to answer the original question, the states have no need to suspend his license, he will be blackballed anyway. If I was ESPN2 though I would try to pick him up as an announcer.

He'd need to have another bad KO before even some body like NY got round to banning him. The US bodies will kind of turn a blind eye to the last one because it happened in Australia.
