....excuse me THE King is THE King because he could do it all. Sure because he was white he got on TV and got more radio play but ELVIS helped create Rock'n'Roll by merging R & B, up tempo Country, and Rockabilly. Also he's The King because of the following....

He had over 149 songs make it onto Billboard's Hot 100, 114 were top 40, 40 were top 10, and 18 went #1. But that's JUST pop not including Country, Gospel, or R&B

He also had 90 charted albums and 10 of those reached number 1

Elvis had over 150 albums/records go Gold, Platinum, or Multi-Platinum

Sure Elvis was inspired by black musicians but he was also inspired by gospel groups too but you don't hear them bitchin about how they don't get any respect.

Yes we all know that certain musicians in the past couldn't reach the heights of Elvis, no matter how talented or creative they are. Yes he did introduce "black music" to the general population, but to give him full and sole credit for starting it as the masses have done is a disservice and distortion of the history of the rock n roll genre.

I sure wonder if 30 or 40 years from now, if the masses will say Eminem is the king of hiphop or Justin Timberlake is the king of Rnb and give them sole credit for starting the genre? Just food for thought.

BTW, I don't have a problem with Elvis, for he did help make rock popular, but he's not the king imo. The masses usually don't know who Berry, Didley, and many great pioneers that help kick start this awesome genre, and they too should be given credit for it, but it seems like only hardcore fans know about them. I never denied Elvis talent. I made an appropriate comparison with Eminem, Justin Timberlake in that the musical genre they engaged in was not popular to the masses/white people until a talented white guy came along and introduced it to them.

Sure everyone borrows or is influenced by someone. But the masses said he created rock n roll and that without Elvis there would not be rock n roll which is entirely false. He did not create this genre. He just made it popular for white kids in the suburbs kind of like Justin Timberlake and Eminem did for different genres of music. There would still be rock n roll without Elvis.

And the reason why Elvis is called the King and is more popular than Berry, Didley, Little Richard and the pioneers was that he was the right color and they were not. This was the 1950's we're talking about when rock exploded. And the 1950s is an era that wasn't too kind to blacks. They needed the right guy to market this musical genre and Elvis is the right guy.

Saying Elvis is the King of rock is like saying Kenny G is the king of Jazz, or Eminem is the king of hip hop or Justin Timberlake is the king of RnB.

I see both sides of the argument when it comes to Elvis. My take is that he was ultimately a great intepreter of songs in a vein similar to Sinatra. The difference being that Elvis could shake his hips and do rock and roll. Elvis was never an innovator and did not invent rock and roll, but he was extremely important in making it palatable for the radio and making it popular. There might have been some racism involved in it needing a white guy to break through, but it was what it was I guess.
