Elvis was the precursor to Eminem, The Beastie Boys,Justin Timberlake, etc. You know, guys that are popularly judged today as making their livings selling black music to white kids in the suburbs, why shield Elvis from the same critique?

Hell even legendary Ray Charles back in an old '94 article straight out said he's not the king of anything. He stole people's music and passed it off as his own including the genre that he supposedly started.

Musical genius Ray Charles says Elvis copied musical style of blacks; he's not 'The King.' | Jet | Find Articles at BNET

Does this song sound familiar? It for sure didn't come from Elvis

"Black music" as you call it would have NEVER reached white ears had it not been for Elvis (and to a lesser extent Jerry Lee Lewis).

Sure Elvis was inspired by black musicians but he was also inspired by gospel groups too but you don't hear them bitchin about how they don't get any respect.

Elvis took Rock to a level that people like Chuck Berry (talented as he may be and he is most certainly talented) could NEVER have taken it

"A lot of people have accused Elvis of stealing the black man's music, when in fact, almost every black solo entertainer copied his stage mannerisms from Elvis" - Jackie Wilson

"He broke the ice for all of us" - Rev. Al Green

"He was an integrator. Elvis was a blessing. They wouldn't let black music through. He opened the door for black music" - Little Richard

....sorry about the neg rep but to DARE compare Elvis to Eminem, I mean if you would have said that to my face you'd be down a couple teeth
Yes we all know that certain musicians in the past couldn't reach the heights of Elvis, no matter how talented or creative they are. Yes he did introduce "black music" to the general population, but to give him full and sole credit for starting it as the masses have done is a disservice and distortion of the history of the rock n roll genre.

I compared Elvis to Eminem, Justin Timberlake and the Beastie Boys in that he made a certain type of black music very popular to the white kids in the suburbs just like them. Isn't this true? SO what part of that statement is false?

I sure wonder if 30 or 40 years from now, if the masses will say Eminem is the king of hiphop or Justin Timberlake is the king of Rnb and give them sole credit for starting the genre? Just food for thought.

BTW, I don't have a problem with Elvis, for he did help make rock popular, but he's not the king imo. The masses usually don't know who Berry, Didley, and many great pioneers that help kick start this awesome genre, and they too should be given credit for it, but it seems like only hardcore fans know about them. I guess that is the problem I have.
