I forgot all fighters we're supposed to go undefeated for their whole careers or they are a bust. Nevermind coming back from their only loss with a win on HBO, you're right his career is dead for sure. That's why you have to mention it twice right Majesty? How bout you mention Audley Harrisson or some of these other fighters who you always lament people for writing off. The hypocrisy is extremely annoying.
Rigondeaux I'm not sure if he's mismanaged, he just got out of Cuba and obviously there is a HUGE adjustment period that comes after that. There are some minor questions imo, like whether or not he can be as effective pressing the fight.
Shawn Porter is way to green to think about stepping up right now, his last performance definitely did not meet expectations.
Bilbo's favorite fighter of all time Cristian Mijares probably fits this as well. Even though all three of his recent losses were against high level competition, he was held to standard he couldn't maintain.
For every story told that divides us, I believe there are a thousand untold that unite us.
Nah Mijares nor Donaire qualify. I am talking about fighters for whom great things were expected, who fell short before they got to fight for world title honours.
Mijares did demolish Jorge Arce so he can definitely be said to have reached the top, he just wasn't there for long.
I'm specifically talking about prospects here, who just fell far short of what people expected at one point.
From the list I mentioned in the original post I think Joel Julio and Andy Lee have been the biggest disappointments. Julio was suppposed to be a future superstar, and Manny Sterward boldly proclaimed Andy Lee would rule the middleweight division.
Both have fallen far short of those ideals.
I don't count Breidas Prescott either as he was never hyped from early on, he beat Amir Khan as an unknown and has since gone back to obscurity, but nobody was touting greatness for him from his very beginnings.
The current prospects as I said above are Landra, Rigondeaux, Korobov, Solis, Porter etc.
I think it's interesting to see who you guys think will succeed and fail, and especially interesting the polarising views we have, CFH thinking Landra will be a p4p star, and myself thinking him the most likely to underachieve.
Interesting debate I think, with the bonus that it's not about dead people at least, but only dead careers.
Rey Bautista comes to mind straight away.
hypocrisy is annoying? well amat
as far as I know, no one was touting Audley Harrison as the next greatest crossover success next to Oscar De La Hoya. And whenever he had a performance stateside he was ridiculed because he didnt give it his all and annoyed many fans with his safety first style. Now lets compare that to Ortiz and how he was touted as the best biggest star in boxing to have a crossover success.
If you consider the kind of hype Ortiz was getting before his loss and the way he lost can be considered a bust that he wasn't all they made him out to be.
That you cannot deny. Victor Ortiz had the biggest hype out of all of these people and when the eyes were on him he lost and not only lost he was ridiculed for the way he lost and some people labeled him as a quitter and even said maybe he isnt tough enough to be a champion.
if you go from being touted as "the next crossover boxing success and the kid with the biggest chance of achieving that", to "maybe he isnt cut out for boxing and has no heart", all in one fight, to not call that a bust is stretching it.
he may bounce back but given all he was hyped up to be and the way he lost, that was a bust.
He was more then just "a fighter that was supposed to be undefeated prospect" he was touted as THE NEXT CROSSOVER STAR in boxing, and he went from that, to maybe he isnt cut out to be a champ and he has no heart in ONE fight. Are you saying that isn't a bust? Cause in one fight all that hype came and went. I consider that a bust. Just as I considered Wladimer a bust when he was beat by Corrie Sanders, because they were hyping the guy as unbeatable and a heavyweight only lennox lewis could stop, and then he was knocked out by Corrie Sanders, THAT was a bust. Wladimer has come back and is no longer a bust but you cannot deny he was a bust at that time. Just like I consider Victor Ortiz a bust after the Maidana fight, what he does in the future may change that but considering all he was hyped up to be and the way he lost and how all that hype has disappeared, right now he IS a bust in my opinion.

Rodela got a lot of play on that Thursday Night Fight Club, being so tall and skinny he was naturally touted as one of the most dangerous men in the division (after switching trainers and getting his focus) then he just got outboxed easily twice.
French Gold medalist Brahim Asloum also fell by the wayside after getting snubbed out in both his title shots
For every story told that divides us, I believe there are a thousand untold that unite us.
Why was Wlad a bust because he got knocked out? All you're saying is that in your opinion he was a bust, clearly he has now proven that not to be the case.
Ortiz may yet bounce back, Amir Khan has and is now a world champ, Ortiz certainly has the talent. He's not done just yet, unlike the other guys I mentioned, I think Joel Julio for example can be regarded as a failure in terms of the early hype in his career.
By your reasoning Lennox Lewis was a bust twice in his career too.
Like OumaFan has said before I'd really like to know how Majesty picks his favorite fighters. He seems to think Victor Ortiz was hyped more then Audley Harrisson.
