This would be bad.Bad meaning bad not bad meaning good.
I love all the overrated opinions of a guy who fought almost 50% of all of his pro fights against World Champions. If that is overrated then how do we rate fighters at all? He won't comeback, he was done after the Hatton fight, injuries, inactivity and age had taken it's toll. People also forget he never turned pro until he was 23 with 270 amateur fights behind him. I think we only ever saw glimpses of his true brilliance in the ring. DLH, Mosley and even Mayweather had the greatest respect for him and whenever his name was mentioned as a possible opponent i reckon they were all a little wary about taking him on.
Well said Third Man. Anyone who thinks Tszyu was overrated doesn't know squat about boxing. One of the all time great combination's of power, timing, and smarts. As Third Man mentioned...the best of his own era had incredible respect for him. One of my all time dream fights would have Tszyu vs. Mayweather...shame it never happened. That all being said...i truly hope he doesn't come back.
i may sound crazy, but i think his style permits it
That's odd then considering they reportedly had a deal in place to fight assuming Tszyu beat Hatton & Mayweather beat Gatti
Tszyu also had a deal set up to face Oscar only to lose to Vince Phillips.
I do feel Tszyu gets overrated a bit, particularly by Aussies, but then I also quite liked him as a fighter & feel for him that he was unfortunate to miss out on the two biggest paychecks of his career.
Which Aussies overrate him?
He was far from flawless and had a definite problem against pressure fighters. On the other hand he had great success against fast slick fighters due to his timing and accuracy.
I honestly think the thing that stopped him getting the big fights was the fact he didnt talk himself up enough and create a load of hype. He was a high risk low reward fight for the likes of Oscar Shane and Floyd due to being virtually unknown in the USA. I dont think he'd have necessarily beaten these guys but i hink he deserved a shot at atleast one of them.
In the late 90s early 2000s he would have been a threat to anyone around his weight class, and deserved a top ten P4P spot. Is that overrating?
Yes, some people tend to overrate him. What was his best win? When your fans have to mention a Zab Judah and a 40 year old Chavez on your resume as your biggest wins, then what does that say?
Good fighter, not an ATG because the resume was really weak, of course to be fair the 140 pound class has been historically weak. Many fighters just either pass through it (Floyd,Manny,Oscar) or completely bypass it (Duran, Mosley). The money and glory is at welter.
If Tszyu wanted the big fights, he should have jumped up to welter.
The option was available for him to take Tszyu first but he took Gatti and hasn't looked back since.
Also he'd have never lost to Phillips again and had he fought Hatton when he was younger (like when he fought Judah younger) he would have beaten any version of Hatton.
I don't think he's overrated either, i've never seen anyone overrate him on this forum. I think he struggled vs swarmers but other than that, he was a pretty well rounded fighter.
He beat some very good fighters like Diosbelys Hurtado, who gave Pernell Whitaker all he could handle. And also early in his career he beat many former world champions.
He had some of the best timing from a boxer, i've seen in modern day boxing. And his power punches were so very accurate, he was great to watch at his best.
I just think he spent too long in the Amateurs, and he should of turned pro earlier.
I hope he stays out because his injuries lone will slow him down. He was definitely great to watch and a true gentleman outside the ring let's remeber him the right way, as he was.
