Conflicts of interest in boxing.

I guess but to do so blatently would just make him look a fool....As for judges the promoters pay them but they have to adhere to a certain standard or else they have to answer to the state commission the one who give them the license to judge bouts...Of course there is always the slight nod (in some cases over nod) to the hometown or promoters fighter but that can be with any sport I guess

I'm not saying Steward would do it, just pointing out he is in a position to do it. Teddy Atlas is in the same position, as he is training Povetkin and is also an announcer. Again not saying he would do it, but he is in a position to do it.

Daxx, I'm asking this, because I honestly don't know what are the standards to choose judges? Specifically what is the qualification to be a licensed judge? I did some research before, but I didn't really get a definitive answer..

TBH I don't know the exact qualifaction to be a judge...I can ask Billy Conn next time I see him and ask him...;.I don't think you have to have a boxing background...Maybe a course on how to judge a bout...EG point system, Ring generalship etc...I do know thewre has to be some background in sports to be considered....

OK from what I understand, first off is you need to contact the Athletic commission to apply, second you need to from what I understand register with the amateur association not exactly sure why but I think it has to do with being able to know all the ins and outs of the sport on a non profit level to help assure no one is being to how to judge based on how they want you to...EG a promoter has a fighter that hits hard but can not box for shit and the Judge is not advised points are based on how hard the fighter hits or pushes the action...They want to make sure the judge knows all angles and because the amatuer scoring system is based on boxing ability and not agressiveness this assures the judges know what to look for in that aspect...

You must learn the rules of not only the state you are judging in but the unified rules as well...You also must apply with the different sanctioning bodies as each one has thier own set of rules as well...You actually have to become a member of sorts from what I am told...That part basically assures the sanctioning body will make a dollar or two off the judges as well...

Also I belive there are levels on which you must achieve...EG a certain amount of fights judged before you can judge a minor title fight then a certain amount more before you can judge a world title fight.....Those are the basics from what I was told but there are more detailed issues I did not have time to discuss

TBH I never gave it thought nbefore I knew abt being an amateur judge becauuse I was one before as well as an amateur ref and coach but all that entitles is paying a fee and going to some clinics then you have to progress according to how much time you put in...EG to be a coach you start at level 1 and have to be at that level a year before being eligable to advance to level 2....

So in truth you put the bug in my ear to learn something new

Normally when Manny Steward is commenting on other fighters Lampley will mention he's training a fighter they might fight so viewers know what the score is. Probably he manages to spin things for his fighter occasionally but how much effect can it have on anything? Not a lot I'd say.

As far as judges go I remember a fight in the nineties, I think Holyfield on a Don King promotion, and there was a scoring controversy and it turned out the judge in question (a woman) had zero boxing/sports background, had worked in the state government previously and had only judged a couple of fights previously. There was some connection between her and the promoter as well I think.
