this thread makes me miss the throw backs
Watch Jones against Hopkins or Toney, he dominated early and didn't do as much late. The guys he dominated in every aspect would be taken out of fights late, but that wasn't because Roy would particularly pick up the pace late. He never showed the sharpness that for example Mayweather has late, or the tenacity Leonard, Pacquiao, Robinson would have late. He have lapses later because he would get so comfortable against guys who he would dominate completely, but a guy like Abraham who does have quick hands which is obvious to see would potentially catch him late with a huge punch.
I only compared Andre Dirrell's handspeed to Roy's and he is just as fast as Roy, don't kid yourself. Roy jumped in more and did more athletic things, but he wasn't faster.
Montel was a great fighter, I think he was really underrated, but Ward is better, and Dirrell has the potential to be better because of his athleticism and the fact he also has a high level of skill when he shows it.
It's stupid to say Reggie Johnson or James Toney or MOntel Griffin would beat these guys for sure because these guys are all at that top level or close to it.
You can continue to underestimate guys, but weren't you convinced Mosley had the perfect style to deal with Floyd? I have news for you, he didn't :/.
Its amazing what a 38 year old mosley was made to look like...ten years ago floyd would have went to sleep.... And so I said mosley had the best chance to beat floyd and he didn't..big deal...You also are convinced that JMM was bigger than floyd when they fought so what does that have to do with anything...
We're talking about RJJ now....And Dirrel is no where near as fast as RJJ, he certainly doesn't have the power which also equates to speed. I didn't say Johnson would win. I'm saying he kessler are similar in styles. And Roy white washed him scoring two kkncokdowns. And if AA hands weren't fast enough to catch Dirrel late, then he isn't catching RJJ def not with a flush punch. You say catch as if Roy was being worn down by the other opponent, but its really him choosing to slow the fight down and not take risks. If AA still poses a threat after 8, then roy would continue to stay away and hurt him..
And youre right Toney, Montel are not for gone conclusions over these guys, but RJJ is over all them..it would be a white wash over them all except Ward, and he'd still lose a comfortable UD or be stopped late.
"Sixty forty I kicks yo' ass, Sixty forty I tears yo' ass up" - Roy Jones
I doubt a Montell Griffin wins this tournament. You have to be able to beat many different styles to win this tournament. James Toney would start as the favorite but I see a lot of trouble for him against an athletic freak like Dirrell. Toney/Ward would be a pick 'em. But a prime RJJ would walk through this tournament. Dirrell would probably win about 3 or 4 rounds against RJJ but that would be the most RJJ would lose against any of these style of fighters.
RJJ wipes the floor with these guys! Although Roy has big power he was a very skilled boxer and he was so much more explosive and powerful with his punches and combos than anyone at 168 now.
Prime James Toney and Joe Calzaghe beat all of them as well...though I suspect Toney would have had trouble with Dirrell and Ward
Prime RJJ would beat them all, if suitably motivated. He got bored far too easily to follow through the super six tournament, maybe?
James Toney and Joe Calzaghe would likely clean up too, dropping a draw and a loss each that they would make up for in overall points, they had the determination to follow through the tournament if not the complete skill to beat every fighter in it (I say that because Toney has losses to the best fighters, and Calzaghe ducked the best fighters that would have beaten him).

He would bulldoze through everybody without breakin a sweat. I dont even wanna get into what he would do to Froch.. I like Froch but Roy would make him look like a pedestrian.
Andre Ward is like a poor man's bernard hopkins and Roy would beat him with one hand just like he did with hops.
I'd feel bad for Carl Froch going up against RJJ, because he just wouldnt give up, face would get mashed.
Handspeed of these compared to that jones is fucking laughable. And kessler, froch, AA, would all be beaten by the Reggie Johnson who BTW fights similar to Kessler. And Roy has much more power, bullet speed vs turtle speed against AA.And would kayo him because his hands are never in position.
And dirrel is fast, but nowhere near as explosive as roy and roy's reflexes would catch dirrel on a counter and the night would be over.
this. Dirrell has speed, but Roy moved like a ghost. He was like Bruce Lee! BAM and back, as fast as you'd blink.
also the gulf in precision punching, not just volume, and the gulf in knockout power, RJJ was a knockout artist too.
He was just way above anyone who has fought at SM ever, with the exception of Sugar Ray maybe. Obviously its nowhee near asbig a division as Middleweight, its a small pool, but roy was most certainly the Great White Shark in that pool.
None of the boxers in the super 6 have proved them selfs greats yet so at this point I say Jones beats them all quite easy.
Balls
Rjj was some super boxer.
He had no great defense, no idea if he had a chin or not, he was so fast and confident i can happily say he was the best fighter ever prime for prime.
The reflexes was just unreal and all the showboating was better than anyone else.
I mean, we all would love to imagine putting our hands behind our back and hitting someone but actually knocking someone down thats just unheard off!
Prime RJJ beats all of them easily, one or two might go the distance as Roy puts on a show.
Prime Roy beats Calzaghe comfortably too, no way slapp happy beats a prime RJJ!
