If your intention is to compete at amateur level, then you need to ensure that your headguard is AIBA approved (it should have a hologram with the AIBA emblem). In the UK we are very strict on this, if it ain't AIBA approved then you can't use it to compete! In terms of general advice, try to ensure that the sides of the headguard do not protrude too much at the side of your eyes otherwise you lose quite a bit of your peripheral vision. Peripheral vision is vital in a boxing match.
