I believe you've answered your own question. For eg, a piston like power dbl (stiff) jab would require you bringing it right back. A quicker dbl not all the way back, while not as powerful, can work nice when setting up a straight right or other combo.

The jab can and should be used in numerous ways, and so can the dbl jab be, imo.
