Default Rafael Marquez To Be Out For Six Months, Hairline Fracture

    By Alfredo Jaime Gomez,

Featherweight Rafael Marquez will be out of action for six months due to the injury he suffered to his right shoulder during Saturday's exciting fight against Puerto Rican southpaw Juan Manuel Lopez, the WBO featherweight. The fight happened at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. The injury prevent Marquez from being able to come out for the ninth round. The recovery period will prevent Marquez from fighting Lopez in a possible March rematch.

"The doctor said I have a hairline fracture in the right shoulder blade. He recommended a rest period of 180-days," Marquez said.

Marquez says the referee Tony Weeks saved Lopez from a possible knockout loss in the fourth round. He knew at that point it was going to be a long fight after suffering the injury in the third.

"In that round I could have knocked Lopez out, but the referee did him a favor by giving him about 45 seconds to recover when he penalized him a point for the fouls. I knew at that time it was all or nothing," Marquez said. "Had it not been for the injury in the third round, I think in the ninth or tenth I would have stopped Juanma."

Like there was ever any doubt. Any moron who knows Boxing could tell Marquez was favoring his right shoulder. He's never rely on his left like he was doing in the Lopez fight. Marquez came into the fight at 75%. From the 3rd round on he was fighting at 30%. Yet still almost pulled out the knock out. To fight 5 rounds in his condition shows the man he is. He had gone beyond his bodies limit. Till his body shut down on him. He didn't do a Cintron and somersault himself out of a fight. Nor did he do a Pacquiao and almost in tears cry to the ref to stop his fight against Sanchez over barely noticeable cuts. This was a man fighting a younger, bigger opponent while handicapped.

i agree with rafa, i feel that rafa did more damage than juan ma and that without that injury he would of stopped him.

Extremely painful, anytime you move your arm your shoulder blade moves. I'm surprised you don't see more of them in boxing, they are easy to break.

And JuanMa has already granted him a rematch when he wasn't contracted to do so. It was a good fight while it lasted, and I'm excited about the possibility of a rematch.

Shame for Rafa really, he fought well in this one, had Juanma in real trouble. Its just amazing he managed to fight on at all after he suffered it. The rematch should be interesting, it was a great fight while it lasted, and I think if he's fully healthy Rafa may stop him

That's cuz there idiots. Lopez himself didn't doubt the injury. He knew he got a lucky break in facing a 30% Marquez

How he got injured? Did Juanma hit him with bat or with plaster in his handwraps? Im a fan of Marquez and would like the rematch, but please no crying if he lose again. Did he present the x-ray? No doubt of the real champ rafa is, but there was going to be an excuse if he lost.

But he did quit. What else would you call that?

There's nothin wrong with that though. He fought a tremendous battle.

There are different types of quitting though. If he had stopped with no real justification ie. Duran/Leonard, then that to me is quitting in it's true sense. But to pull out with a hairline fracture? No, you don't really have a choice. I would argue that he shouldn't have fought knowing there was a problem, but he obviously didn't want to cancel again.

With such a serious injury and at 35, I don't think we will be seeing a rematch. You sense that a 2 armed Marquez could have got the job done, but if we wait another year even those two hands might not be enough anymore.

Anyone who's seen his career knows that's not how he does. It's like the same idiots who were sayin Izzy was a quitter after his first fight with Rafa. These guys know that sometimes it's better to fight another day. I think age & ring rust will probably play into Juanma's hands in a rematch, but in truth if Rafa had his right hand & a ref who didn't decide to deduct a point at the most random time he would likely have stopped Lopez.

Oooooh this makes the possibility of a rematch VERY interesting. I mean JuanMa had to resort to bullying Marquez once Marquez showed the potency of his sniping. I wonder how it will fair next time? Will Marquez have a few extra tricks up his sleeve?

I think Marquez' wear and tear will undoubtedly rear its ugly head at some point. Like someone said, he's officially old now.

rafa himself didn't quit. his corner didn't let him out to continue the fight. at least he didn't take a knee!
