No but it was on the main board so anybody could have read it and if you were from that community then you would not like it. I have never heard the term Pikey until I watched the film Snatch and it was used in a derogatory way in there.
I do and don't agree with you.

Gypsy's are not actually a race. But they still actively try to set themselves apart and they do see themselves as a breed apart. Their customs, traditions and even morals are vastly different than ours and I an completely comprehend why people can dislike them.

I would also like to add that I have seen travellers play the race card on numerous occasions to tilt odds in their favour. You can't have butter on both sides, you can't complain that you are discriminated one day and then belittle and in some cases intimidate so called settled" people.

    Ignorance... Nice

Missy, now I suspect your being racist without even knowing it.

If Tynkers are of a specific gene pool, how can they not be considered an Ethnic group?

For example, just because Hindu speaking Indians and Romanian Gypsies practically speak the same language, it doesn't mean they fall into the same ethnic group, does it.
(no I know you didn't know that and yes I am re-educating your apparent ignorance)

Anyway if it isn't, it's still derogatory, it's still social prejudice, it actually stems from Xenophobia and has absolutely no place on the main board.

by your definition the inbred southerners are just a different race.

gypsies are not one type either. I don't need preaching at regarding the rom cultures.

    TF ain't a gypsy.

Whatever law says that is fucking stupid. Can you be a bigot towards those cultures? Sure. Can you be an anti-semite to the Jews? Yes. But racist? No, they are races ergo you can't be racist to them UNLESS you pick on their RACE and are of a different race yourself....that's how racism works, that's why its called racism instead of Meany-ism or something more general.

Just wondering, I really dont know if they are proud to be Pikey'es.
Depends on your previous relationship with them...
There are a couple in our boxing club, alright guys and I can openly share opinions about travellers and they don't mind.
However If I said anything like that to a traveller I didn't know I'd get messed up. Not that I'd be saying anything offensive or denigrating- they are just extremely concious of their status.

In this country the Jews have been established as a race as have Sikhs because they can trace their roots to a specific location and time. Muslims and Rastafarian's however have not been able to and are not classed as a race.

You see Missy, The thing is they see themselves as a different breed.

In Irish history the British Empire forced Irish families and tribes from their land. The famous Cromwell quote was "to hell or to Connaught." Later the British allowed Irish people to take up small plots of land with two options; convert to British rule and the Church of England or pay heavy rates to take up land.
The travellers derive from those that never took up land and refused to pay anything towards the British Empire. Rather than taking up land they lived as nomads and quickly garnered a bad reputation. This has a point, I swear

Today, Irish travellers/pikeys remain very traditional, many still live nomadic lives, they speak in a fashion which is a direct translation of the old irish language and retain old traditions such as "NA DEISE" or faction fighting.

However, my main point is they still only marry other travellers as it is seen as shameful to "breed" with anyone outside of other families they feel have endured and set themselves apart as a different breed.
