I bet that the next time you hit the heavy bag your approach to it will be a whole bunch different than it has been. You need to learn to involve your brain in the activity- not about how to throw a particular punch, or how to avoid getting hit. Those are the things that you need to be able to do without thinking.
What you need to think about is how to hit somebody that doesn't want to get it and is, simultaneously, trying to hit you. You have, it sounds like, a new appreciation for the importance of range and distance. That's a pretty good place to start.
