Well, let's start with 2 things.

1- How to deal with adversity. I can't believe how bad Lemieux reacted to the counter-attack by Rubio in the end of the fifth. He were clearly leading the fight but as soon that Rubio placed a good punch, he lost it.

2- His defense when things aren't going good. Not only he loose the edge of the fight in the fifth, but weren't doing anything to recuperate in the sixth. Also, he lack in defense is what caused Rubio comeback.

I'm still shocked, but I still love that kid. The way I see it, he simply hit a wall sooner than I expected. He should have spared with Bute or another champ...but oh well, it's wasy to say that now that we know the result...

Damn I missed all the fights tonight...at least I got to eat some good sushi and some sapporos. I always like to read the first few pages of a fight thread when theres an upset. Sounds like Lemiuex didnt have a backup plan when his power wasnt enough to carry him? I am not missing tommorrows fights!

    Great upset !

So many veterans say "I'm going to take him into deep water and drown him" and so often that doesn't happen.

But tonight Rubio did exactly what he said he was going to do, he survived the early onslaught, picked his spots, countered very well and beat Lemieux.

Lemieux really needs to learn how to clinch, and not to throw himself out.

Bit of an early stoppage by the corner, but better too early than too late.
"You knocked him down...now how bout you try knockin me down ?"

Great performance by Rubio. It's always a bad idea to underestimate an experienced fighter. I felt bad for Lemiuex - you could tell he was really embarrassed by the result. I don't think it was bad sportsmanship with him getting outta there ASAP, he was just mortified. Hopefully he will be able to get back on the horse, cause he's got a lot to work with and he's exciting to watch. Plus he's a kid!

Good win for Rubio. Lemieux is very exciting, but he needs more experience. Would like to see him go for a WBA eliminator against Khurtsidze or Macklin.

Well, at last now he know how big the world is.

He wasted too much energy to dominate the first 5 round. He got caught in the sixth and still wanted to go all in. If only he had thrown his pride in the 7th and switched into a tight defence, he would have won that fight.

Anyway, the kid just turned 22 last December. He got a lot of boxing before him. I just hope he'll see this lost as a positive experience and learn from it.

And that's what his corner seemed to be getting at after the fight. He's only 22. Khan rebounded after being more viciously knocked out as did David Haye. Lemieux can do it too. It was wierd though that the first time someone stood up to his punches for a little while, he folded. He needs to learn to pace himself maybe a little bit better. I'm not sure.

How did Rubio go into this fight an underdog? In his last fight Lemieux beat 37 year old Gates, his biggest win is over Camacho Jr., and he went 10 with Naugler, who had lost 5 of his previous 6 and two more since, and he has less than 55 total rounds of pro experience. Rubio is only 30, has fought against and held his own with a much much higher level of competition, and hasn't lost in a long time. Other than one fight where he got caught cold, and against Pavlik (when he was on his roll), he seems to have a pretty reliable chin; a good solid pro, and methinks the Lemiuex camp bit off too big a bite.

You are 100% right with 20/20 hindsight. But, the winner of the fight got a mandatory title shot against Zbik or Chavez Jr., which would be a major pay day. They probably looked at the Rubio v. Pavlik fight and thought Lemieux could do the same. Truth is, and as you point out, maybe he can, but not yet. In reality, he should have turned pro later.

Hmm it's quite early to say that. It'll depend on how Lemieux will deal with this defeat. The need of the perfect score is overrated. But if he turn like Prince Hamed, then yes I'll agree with you.
