Oh....... one big one I forgot to mention......

Last night I learned that not a lot of old-timer boxing fans text into boxing polls during fight telecasts. Last night's poll was about who was the greatest all-time Puerto Rican fighter. The results, although I don't remember the percentages, were (in order):

    1. Felix Trinidad
    2. Miguel Cotto
    3. Wilfredo Gomez
    4. Wilfredo Benitez
    5. Ivan Calderon (?) I think he was in there, but I'd had too many beers by then.
    6. Carlos Ortiz

I love Cotto, but no way he rates above Gomez or Benitez, two of the very greatest of all time. Gomez still holds a few boxing records, and also holds one of the very best knockout ratios of all time as well. Wilfredo "El Radar de St. Just" Benitez is and will always be the youngest world title holder in the history of the sport, and was a defensive grandmaster, with a little power to boot, as well. If Calderon was truly on the list, I don't rate him that high either. There's plenty of past Puerto Rican champions that could've been on that list.

I kind of expected those results, though. It stands to reason that most texters are more familiar with the recent generation of fighters.

Funny that you bring that up...I was talking with my friend while the fights were on. He fought pro 1969-1971, trained with Emile Griffith, so he's been around for awhile. His opinion, to paraphrase, was that anybody that doesn't think Carlos Ortiz is the best PR fighter is an idiot. Makes me think I'll go looking for Ortiz (Carlos) fights today.
