Not that Demspey needs me to defend him, but a couple of things.
1. Dempsey was a hard, hard man who came from brutal circumstances.
2. He tried to enlist for WWI and was turned down, the slacker charge has been discredited. In WWII I think he enlisted in the Coast Guard at 45 when he didn't have to.
3. He signed twice to fight Harry Wills but nobody would promote the fight. The Johnson-Jeffries riots scarred the sport for a long time.
Now Jack Dempsey was about as far from a saint as a man can be. But certain myths prevail about him that as near as I can determine simply aren't true.
