Default Margarito's eye struggling to heal, career may be in jeopardy

Antonio Margarito, the former world welterweight boxing champion beaten by Manny Pacquiao in November, is struggling to recover from a right eye injury suffered in that bout and will undergo an extensive examination next week that probably will determine whether his career can resume.

Margarito (38-7, 27 knockouts) was struck in the eye by a left uppercut from Pacquiao in the fourth round of his unanimous-decision loss to the Filipino star Nov. 13 at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Margarito's promoter, Bob Arum, earlier this year sought to schedule a summer date for Margarito to have a rematch against world super-welterweight champion Miguel Cotto, then pushed it back to September.

Word came Thursday that Margarito will now visit the University of Utah's prestigious John A. Moran Eye Center next week.

"The eye is still giving him trouble; it has not completely healed," Arum said.

Margarito's trainer, Robert Garcia, said he is "worried" about his fighter, who was ensnared in scandal in 2009 after plaster-coated inserts were pulled from inside his hand wraps before his loss to Shane Mosley at Staples Center. The California State Athletic Commission revoked Margarito's license.

"It's hard to think that he'll have to maybe quit like this when there's still million-dollar paydays out there for him," Garcia said. "I always tell these guys to invest their money when they get it, because that next big fight might never come. This is a big hit. He's a close friend."

    It's all Robert Garcia's fault.

The beating he took off Shane Mosley was bad enough, the beating he took off Manny Pacquiao is career ending. He took a ridiculous amount of punishment, and probably will never be the same.

It's EXTREMELY rare that I would take joy in the permanent injury of a fighter, but this is such a case. The scumbag doesn't deserve to be making those million dollar pay days and I genuinely hope his career is over.

I'm trying hard to feel sorry for him, but I just don't.

He's made his money though, and with all the punishment he's sustained throughout his career it's probably best that he does retire.

I don't feel bad for him, but Pac did During the fight he implored the ref to stop the fight for a couple of rounds. But Garcia did a shitty job. The ref did a shitty job. Pac-he seemed to take his foot off of the gas in the final couple of rounds as he didn't want to do anymore damage on Margacheato.

I think he's been cheating since Lujan. How do you rip a mans ear off? Good on him.

Cheater or not, the man took one hell of a beating from Pac and he took it like a man. His corner should of saved him though. An eye for an eye is not right in this sport because it can cause double the tragedy.

Im amazed at responses to this. You guys do realise that this is all bad press for boxing right? Yes Margarito cheated and hes an arsehole (bad press for boxing) but the media doesnt see this as a good thing, theyd turn this into a "boxing is too dangerous' article.

Career ending injuries too ANYONE in a fight does no favours for the sport. Margarito was punished by the boxing authorities for what he has done, he doesnt need to die in the ring to make up for it.

    Like Shane could've done?...

A year out of the sport then to return and earn then return to earn MILLIONS from a fight with the world's #1 fighter is NOT punishment.

He deserves everything he gets. Hope he spunks his money on drugs and prostitutes and ends up living in a basement under a boxing gym like Luis Resto did..

So youd damage the sport just for the sake of getting back at one fighter?

Boxing doesnt need another blemish on it, margarito already gave it one with his scandal he doesnt need to add another with a severe injury or death in the ring.

He took a severe beating and now may be forced to retire from it.

This isn't a blemish on the sport as you put it, he took a beating (like a man) and may have to retire. That's the risk when you step into a ring. It's happened to many others but this time some people can smile at his misfortune. So what? Each to their own.

By the way, I don't know why you keep mentioning death, no one has said they want him to die. I think you're being a little dramatic.
