Re: Is boxing your favorite sport?
It's up there but will always be behind football for me.
Don't think I am into it as much as I used to be - current situations like the Pac v PBF not happening don't help.
I became a big fan in late 80s when I was around 16. The Tyson era and the Eubank-Benn-Watson era over here in the UK. Couldn't beat the excitement of a live fight when two big names were going toe to toe and you just had no idea who might win (ok with Tyson you did pre 90 but you just loved watching him destroy people).
A huge Benn fan I then became a massive Lewis fan into the 90s so that carried my interest on and made me take a wider interest, in histioric bouts too, and at one point in mid 90s I knew the records of all the major players across all the weight classes. Then of course the internet came along and I met people like you lot on the Naz forum (loved watching him fight but never really warmed to him ) which then led to here.
Now unless its shown on Sky I don't get to see many of the main men fight at moment (have seen Martinez fight just twice) so guess thats a lot to do with my interest dwindling. And also I have not been a huge fan of anyone really since Lewis retired - the sort of fan where you were on edge of your seat and worried sick they might lose. I thought Haye might be that man a couple of years ago but have gone off him since as he isn't busy enough - that might change if he does Wlad.
I don't want to be any older (!) but I can only imagine how awesome it jmust have been to have experienced the Hagler-Leonard-Duran-Hearns era first hand as an avid fight fan. I saw the later bouts between some of those guys but never appreciated what they stood for till a few years later. I'm presuming their fights from the early 80s were shown live in UK at the time ??
And then of course I missed the Ali era - but then again most of us here did
Don't bully fat kids - they've got enough on their plate
