Sean O'Grady fought Jim Watt in the hotbed of Glasgows Kelvin Hall 30 years ago. Watt is still regarded as one of the great British boxers. In the 12th round (of 15) of a great fight O'Grady had Watt serious trouble. Watt headbutted O'Grady, cut him badly and O'Grady was robbed as Watt got a ridiculous TKO.
I remember how gracious O'Grady was in defeat. He (and Watt, in fairness) had resisted turning the contest into an Irish Republican versus Scottish Prodestant match, which is what the promoters were hoping to make it at a difficult time in Irish history.
I guess we figured O'Grady, at 21 or 22 years old, was bound to get a rematch at some stage, but it never happened. I presume Watt did not fancy it. The next we heard O'Grady had retired at 24.
For this fight Sean O'Grady is fondly remembered in these parts for his bravery, skill and sportsmanship.
