Had there been someone else claiming to be the middleweight champ when Marvin was a round?

The fight negotiations would have gone like this.

Marvin: I want to fight you tomorrow

    Other guy: In my hometown

    Marvin: Fine

Other guy: My brother as referee

    Marvin: Fine (starting to steam)

Other guy: My parents as judges

Marvin: (gritted teeth) let's GO already!

Other guy: I get an 80% split

    Marvin: GET ME MY GLOVES!
Not exactly true dude, although he was certainly a lot better than these two prima donnas, it took nearly 2 years for his fight with Hearns to get made & then negotiations fell apart for a rematch. Not to mention how he behaved after losing to Leonard, which really didn't strike me as someone wanting to prove he was THE MAN. Like almost all these guys, when they're hungry on the way up, they'll do what it takes. Not that I blame him for that decision, he's got his marbles intact & has plenty of cash.

Anyway I don't know why Hagler isn't rooting for Floyd. They've got so much in common. Both bald, black & like to hit women (oh I went there)
Not sure where you are getting your data. Two years to make the Hearns fight? Really? Hearns was campaigning at 154 up until the Hagler fight. As for a rematch what would have been the point? Hearns hit the guy with his very best shot...and busted his hand in three places!

I NEVER complain when guys retire. When they choose to be done, they choose to be done.

While champion Hagler knocked off 12 challengers, eleven by KO. Of those 12? Every one was a top ten and nine of them were top five ranked.

THAT is what I want from a fighter.

I want a Hagler v Leonard rematch before that.

Hagler trained with the Petronellis which explains his affinity for Italy. And yes, her has been in movies, commercials, and ads around the country.

Hearns-Hagler happened right on time. The rematch didn't happen, b/c neither guy could gain but so much from it. Most people thought Hagler would walk through the same punches to land his own and win, yet again. Hearns hurt Hagler bad, but would never be able to purely exchange and win that fight.

That win combined with Hagler's next performance is what gave Leonard the idea that he could actually beat him. Leonard just kept "popping up" ringside for these fights while Hagler salivated at the thought of landing a big money fight with the premadonna.

I've read it a biography of Hearns by a British trainer called Brian Hughes (excellent book btw). They first tried to make the fight a few months after the win over Benitez. Hearns fought a big British Middleweight, whose name I've forgotten as I write this, to get used to the weight. Then there were all kinds of disagreements and it fell apart. A year later they tried again & were seemingly much closer till someone on the Hagler side didn't like it and pulled the fight & he fought Duran instead. Then about a year after that, they finally did fight & it was a decent three rounds

EDIT: I also should have said there were negotiations for a rematch, which fell away. I wasn't alive at the time so can't speak on how much the public wanted it, but the book implies there was a fair bit of anticipation from the general public for another one.

Now, while the book appeared to place the blame more at Hagler's door, which I don't know if it is true, it certainly has enough evidence and sources to support that there were negotiations. Difference being that back then people negotiated with each other rather than through boxingscene & Elie Suckballs.

I've no issues with Hagler or how he did things, he had a GREAT resume, but it's easy to romantacize these guys & how he reacted to the defeat to Leonard was beneath him in my eyes. That said he also operated in an era, where there weren't half a dozen 'champions' at a weightclass & he could create a legacy at one weight. Nowadays people would be demanding he meet a WW at 154 or move up 168 to prove his greatness.
