Whatever happened to him? I was looking at his first fight with Toney and started wondering when did he decline. Was it after RJJ lit him up because I can't remember much about him after that.

He was a great defensive boxer with an "Ice" cold demeanor who was not afraid to take on anyone.

His fights with Toney along with his DQ win over Jones definately define his career.

Look up his later fights against Tarver and Johnson, he started to get hit a lot more in those fights than he used to.

I like Griffin a lot msyelf, I figure he slowed down just enough for guys to start tagging him, that and he never had a great chin or much power in his punches.

A very overlooked fighter though, he would have beaten A LOT of top fighters in his day.

I thought Montell was a very ordinary athlete with a GREAT trainer in Eddie Futch and he followed directions like a pro. But Montell was awfully stumpy to be a 175. He's the shorter than Floyd Mayweather and has the same reach and he was only an ok puncher.

When Futch slowed down and then retired in the late 1997 or so IIRC, so did Montell.

Montell Griffin always reminds me of Chris Byrd, small, non-big punching southpaws who had to work extra hard to stay on terms with fighters and who had some great wins and moments.
