My people are from West Cork mostly. The folks in the Republic Of Ireland are generally a mix of Irish and Viking and Norman and mostly Catholic. The folks in Northern Ireland/the Six Counties are generally of Scots-Presbyterian stock (who moved to Ireland in the 17th Century), who really think of themselves that way or as English, or the same backgrounds at in the Republic. I haven't been to the North since the Peace accords were signed. But last time I was there one did not need a passport, hell there weren't even checkpoints at the border in operation. Up North there was, at that time, a very tribal difference between the two groups.
I'm sure someone here has a more recent experience.
