I can't stand him, but Ward is a great fighter.

I wouldn't call him great, slick, good skills, but not great.

He's outclassed everyone in a pretty good division and has never even looked in danger of losing. I'm comfortable calling him great at this point.

I just have a different standard for what I call "great", and Ward don't qualify.
