A hand injury has ruled out Joe Calzaghe from his triumphant Homecoming at the Millennium Stadium on July 8. The WBO & IBF World Super-Middleweight Champion damaged his left hand, the same hand in which he broke a bone in against Evans Ashira last September, in a training session this week. Calzaghe is absolutely devastated that the injury has once again held up his career and his dream of headlining at the Welsh landmark. Despite Calzaghe's withdrawal, Frank Warren's show at the Millennium Stadium will still go ahead with a superb six-title fight card including the highly anticipated Heavyweight rematch between Danny Williams and Matt Skelton, Swansea's KO King Enzo Maccarinelli leads the Welsh charge along with the explosive shoot-out between Gary Lockett and Ryan Rhodes for the WBU Middleweight title.

    WOW

    I AM TOTALLY PISSED!!

Nearly crying to be more exact!!

Joe said he hardly does any sparring these days because of the hand, i wonder if we have seen the final chapter in his career?? Lets remember he nearly pulled out of the Lacy fight because of a hand problem 4 weeks before the fight. Oh well another great card not going to happen.
Yeh where did we find out about that
Well i had to get that in big fella.

I'll agree with that & I wouldn't fault the man.

Anyone know what carpaltunnel syndrome is?

Imagine living with that annoying shat...then imagine trying to muster up the strength to open the lid on a fwockin pickle jar.

Joe should get no flack for wanting to save his hands so that he can hand out those dollar dollar bills that he earned breaking em apart.

I've seen footage from after the Ashira/Calzaghe fight when Joe was in bad bad pain and wincing as they cut off his glove.
He looked like he was gonna pass out and the swelling was huge.
Gotta feel for the guy really.

    from bbc news

Joe Calzaghe has withdrawn from his 8 July Millennium Stadium show with a recurrence of his left-hand injury.
The WBO and IBF super middleweight champion, whose career has been dogged by hand problems, suffered the blow in a training session this week.

"Joe has been advised to rest, we hope he will return in the autumn," said promoter Frank Warren, who had trouble finding an opponent for Calzaghe.

The show goes ahead, headlined by Danny Williams v Matt Skelton at heavyweight.

Amir Khan's eighth pro fight will also be on the bill, along with WBU cruiserweight champion Enzo Maccarinelli, who is expected to fight for the interim WBO title.

We look forward to welcoming him back for a rescheduled fight in front of his home crowd when he's back fighting fit

Millennium Stadium chief executive Paul Sergeant

Gary Lockett is set to meet Ryan Rhodes for the WBU middleweight crown, Bradley Pryce makes his first Commonwealth light middleweight defence, Tony Doherty faces Taz Jones for the Celtic welterweight title, and Gavin Rees challenges Scot Martin Watson for the Celtic lightweight crown.

Calzaghe broke his left hand against Evans Ashira last September, and the problem flared up before his stunning win over Jeff Lacy in March.

The 34-year-old Welshman had considered withdrawing from that unification bout, but fought through the pain for a landmark victory.

Despite his new-found worldwide respect, Warren had trouble finding a suitable opponent for Calzaghe's Cardiff homecoming.

Roy Jones Jr was initially touted for the bout, but priced himself out of the market.

An announcement of an opponent was delayed three times, Warren complaining that all the viable contenders were either contracted elsewhere or had lost intervening fights.

Just this week, it looked like light heavyweight star Glen Johnson would be secured for the show, despite concerns over purse money and what weight the encounter should be at.

But Johnson - still angered by Calzaghe's late withdrawal from a planned bout in 2004 with a back injury - has been left disappointed once again.

Those attending the 8 July show who retain their used tickets will be given a 10% discount for Calzaghe's ring return in the autumn.
"It's disappointing for everyone that Joe will be unable to fight but even more devastating for Joe himself," said Millennium Stadium chief executive Paul Sergeant.

"We look forward to welcoming him back for a rescheduled fight in front of his home crowd when he's back fighting fit."

Over 13,000 tickets have already been sold for the Cardiff show.

if they did'nt have so much trouble with the opponent i would believe this story 100% but it smells a bit fishy to me,the show is still going ahead, frank warren has sold alot of tickets and he gets to put on another big show with joe at a later date.i do understand why no one wants to fight joe though because after he beat up lacy so bad who would want to take that risk.

Typical, after all my mouthing off about how pthe top fighters were ducking Joe, I get this! I was really looking forward to the whole bill, and this does take the shine off it, but I hope FW comes throgh with a top level opponent for Macca, though it is getting very late.

I'm really expecting all the haters to start slagging him off for faking injury, as the Johnson fight comes to fruition, but that's only to be expected. He's still a top notch pro and wouldn't duck anyone, and that's my last word on it.

In no way shape or form would Calzaghe 'Pull out' and fake an injury for this one.
Bringing home his belts to show off and fighting in front of his home crowd is what he's all about.
    End of.

Yeah!! Thats dissapointing to say the least...I think that would have brought the house down in fron of JC's crowd...OH WELL, Joe will rest up and we will see him again...Problem is at 34 and a SERIOUS BRIDDLE HANDS how much more Joe will we see?

Dont get all in my shit about this but it wouldn't be a bad thing for Joe to retire I mean Horrific hand problems the rigors of sparring and the actual fights puts alot of wear and tear..At 34 for he is not an old man but he is far from a kid you dont come back as fast...

He has been the champ for 8 years, just had the best fight of his life, has a shitload of money has a hot girl and is beloved by his country man JOE RELAX YOU EARNED IT

JoeCal is most likely not faking it and is really injured. Right when he he thought his career was gonna skyrocket, by the time he comes back the states would have forgot about him again and he would probably drop off a couple people P4P lists.
